He's a Red State Democrat who probably thinks he is representing their interests.
In the grand scheme of things, I would much rather let the Republican Party have the racists, the xenophobes, and the unrepentant misogynists if it means the Democratic Party has to break bread with a few socially conservative Appalichian moonshiners.
The problem is that the Republican Party for two decades has worked relentlessly, and mostly surreptitiously, to undermine our democracy, thwart the will of the people, and ensure their continued power even as the majority of people continue to vote against them. When you think about how far reaching this nefarious scheme is, it boggles the mind: Gerrymandering, voter suppression, undermining the voting rights act, neutering unions, allowing unlimited dark money into politics. Packing the courts with rightwing nutjobs was never about Roe v Wade. It was always about creating a fig leaf of legal cover to dismantle the protections this nation put in place to protect our democratic traditions.
Republicans look at demographic and voting results - and they are not stupid. They are fully awarel they cannot cling to power without thwarting the popular will and subverting democracy.
It is those institutional assaults on Democracy that have to be addressed. Senator Munchkin, in the grand scheme of things, isn't even worth worrying about.
