In the short term, like right now, he's a fucking pain in the ass and could use a good kick in his.
Being a politician is more complicated than most people think. You do not just vote blindly as the people of your district want. the pol has to take the country as a whole into consideration. He has to think about impacts on the world and our allies.He has to take his own values into consideration. He also has to listen to what his party wants. Even has to think about what the president will do.

Political office should be held by enlightened elites that don't need a job.
We don't need "regular folk."
We need moral, respectable, elite geniuses whose only reason to dirty their hands in government is a desire to give back and serve the country and its people.
I don't want to have a beer with my senator. I want him or her to act like somebody with both a big heart and a big brain without being a trashy populist.
I want to see intelligence and dignity from my representatives in government.
