MASJ Maternity leave rulling

Chapdog

Abreast of the situations
What do you all think about the new ruling of only 8 weeks guaranteed?

Personally i would rather see it be 3-6 months. I don't know how a mother can leave an 8week old baby. its not a puppy for god sakes. There are plenty of temp agencies and people out of work who can fill in for that time. You should not be in jeopardy of losing your job if you have a child.

F*ck that. We should have 6 to 12 months of mandatory paid maternity leave, like most other civilized countries have. I'd personally say 12 months should be a minimum.

As far as I know, the US is the only developed country that doesn't have legally mandated paid maternity leave. Family values, indeed.

I agree we should have it but from an alternative perspective and as a hiring manager if I was running a small company and interviewing for a new accountant to do my book keeping so I no longer had to do it would I be biased towards:
1) newly married 30yo male
2) newly married 30yo Female

Keep in mind that if i have to pay for 6 or 12months of maternity I don't have any money to hire another accounting temp and would need to do the work myself. how do we deal with this situation unless the law forces the government to pay for it.

Yup, it's a win, win situation like student loans as you promote having more children who grow up to become tax payers.

I know a lot of people who would like to have more kids but can't cause Mom has to go to work to help pay the bills. When I was a kid that was almost scandalous.

I love how Chap is all in favor of government action when it serves to benefit someone like him (or his family) but fucking hates it when government does something that benefits people not like him.

Business and corporate interests run this country. My personal opinion, is that if you put this to a national plebiscite vote, the overwhelming majority of people would volunteer to take a one percent pay cut in wages or whatever, or a tiny increase in tax withholdings so that women can get a year of paid maternity leave. The only people who would vote no in that plebiscite would be conservative republicans. (j/k)

The other hypothetical, is that if our legislatures were 50% women - like they are in some scandinavian countries - i.e., a legislature that equitably refelcts the demographics of the country - you would have paid maternity leave and publically subsidized day care, like most other developed countries have. So, vote for more women, bro!

Seems that having a baby or not is a choice. Employers that have a difficult time retaining good employees might well wish to give some paid time, some period of guaranteed return. However, government should not mandate the periods of time.

I am in favor of common sense regulation such as protecting our children (including letting a mother be a mother). I also would like to see gay marriage be legal or just eliminate marriage all together from law and let it always be a civil union. churches can keep marriage as a symbolic ceremony. I want more oversight on wall street as you can read in many of my posts.

Just setting record straight that im not some sort of right winger. But i guess to ultra leftists I probably come across as to conservative for thinking giving 2+ years of unemployment benefits is wrong or that all the stimulus that is being printed is going into the wrong type of people who have already demonstrated failure to succeed.

Perhaps the sentiments contained in my opinion, are not fashionable to procure them general favour with such citizens with political views as y'all have, but the responsibility of the child isn't the employers.

Why should employers be mandated to pay someone to sit at home and take care of a child?

Nice call! F*cking free loading Mothers!

Thanks for providing the libertarian/conservative perspective!

Let the sperm donor help out.

Such laws could hurt the small business owner. Which could make them avoid employing ladies.

last time i checked, the birth rate for the u s of a middle class was negative

the only reason the u s of a birth rate is not negative is poor immigrants

Uh then who would? If you leave it up to the private sector they would mandate the time at "Zero Days". You can't have your cake and eat it to Annie.

I hear ya. I'm often viewed as a partisan liberal because I absolutely despise the far right.

That might be the case in some businesses. Of course, if an employer knows their employees work and will be hard pressed to replace at the same level, they may offer inducements for return. It should be up to the employer.

because it's just plain bad business to eliminate about 40% of your market on human resources cause they have a false dualism is forced upon them. Stay at home to raise baby or have a career.

They would lose out on a lot of extraordinarily talented and productive workers by being so short sighted. It's talent which runs todays modern economy and your an idiot of a business man if you deny your self top notch talent because you believe in an outmoded paradigm.

Now that's a reasonable point Annie. The problem is, a lot of employers don't view woman as that sort of resource. There's still a lot of neandrathols who believe your place is in the home bare foot and pregnant.

To me in our talent driven modern economy it would be insane not to offer these sort of inducement to women workers.....but look around you.

And the Neanderthals would deserve it when their former female employer returns to market with their competitor. Keep the resume up-to-date. Document projects, responsibilities, and performance.
