Mayer castigates liberals for Covid cluelessness

Thought this was odd. The NY Times doesn't take polls. This was a Gallup Poll that the Times merely reported. Both Republicans and Democrats misunderstood the effects of Covid, according to the poll, with Republicans underestimating them and Democrats overestimating them. Here is the relevant part of the story:

"More than one-third of Republican voters, for example, said that people without Covid symptoms could not spread the virus. Similar shares said that Covid was killing fewer people than either the seasonal flu or vehicle crashes. All of those beliefs are wrong, and badly so. Asymptomatic spread is a major source of transmission, and Covid has killed about 15 times more Americans than either the flu or vehicle crashes do in a typical year.

Democrats, on the other hand, are more likely to exaggerate the severity of Covid. When asked how often Covid patients had to be hospitalized, a very large share of Democratic voters said that at least 20 percent did. The actual hospitalization rate is between 1 percent and 5 percent.

Democrats are also more likely to exaggerate Covid’s toll on young people and to believe that children account for a meaningful share of deaths. In reality, Americans under 18 account for only 0.04 percent of Covid deaths."

What this says to me is that Americans by and large are very poorly informed even about matters that are widely and accurately reported in the news.

^ This is what I found also. It figures Faux News would put a lying spin on the real article.

Yes they do.
This was a Gallup Poll that the Times merely reported.
So?
Both Republicans and Democrats misunderstood the effects of Covid, according to the poll, with Republicans underestimating them and Democrats overestimating them. Here is the relevant part of the story:

"More than one-third of Republican voters, for example, said that people without Covid symptoms could not spread the virus.
Covid19 is an airborne virus. It's in the air everywhere and on every surface. Irrelevant comment.
Similar shares said that Covid was killing fewer people than either the seasonal flu or vehicle crashes.
Covid19 does not kill, so this is true.
All of those beliefs are wrong, and badly so.
Right out of a religious belief from a member of the Church of Covid.
Asymptomatic spread is a major source of transmission,
Covid19 is an airborne virus. Buzzword fallacy. There is no such thing as 'asymptomatic spread'.
and Covid has killed about 15 times more Americans than either the flu or vehicle crashes do in a typical year.
Covid19 does not kill.
Democrats, on the other hand, are more likely to exaggerate the severity of Covid.
Like you?
When asked how often Covid patients had to be hospitalized, a very large share of Democratic voters said that at least 20 percent did. The actual hospitalization rate is between 1 percent and 5 percent.
Hospitalized for what?
Democrats are also more likely to exaggerate Covid’s toll on young people and to believe that children account for a meaningful share of deaths. In reality, Americans under 18 account for only 0.04 percent of Covid deaths."
Covid19 does not kill.
What this says to me is that Americans by and large are very poorly informed even about matters that are widely and accurately reported in the news.
The news isn't accurate. It's largely fiction.

Same here. Something's fishy.

I found what I think he was referring to. And the NYT wasn't the one who did the polls.

Thank you.

Democrats, on the other hand, are more likely to exaggerate the severity of Covid. When asked how often Covid patients had to be hospitalized, a very large share of Democratic voters said that at least 20 percent did. The actual hospitalization rate is between 1 percent and 5 percent.

Darth I will agree with you and Maher that the media can scare the shit out of people and need to be careful about how they can instill unnecessary fear in people. I can honestly say it is not intentional scaring! It's more to do with the way humans can get wrapped up into sensationalism- both in the media and in their audience.

But at the same time, you can't blame the media for the uptick in the pandemic-
I completely blame the media for the so-called 'pandemic'. The fear mongering by the media and by Democrats feeding the media is the entire cause of the 'panic'.

Covid19 does not kill. Indeed, it's the mildest of the covid/SARS series viruses so far discovered. NONE of the covid/SARS series viruses kill.
THEY ARE TRYING TO BE RESPONSIBLE- AND I CAN ASSURE YOU BILL MAHER REALIZES THIS TOO.
Fear mongering and propaganda is not being responsible, dumbass.
Let's just all keep it real! Try not to be sensationalized yourself OK?
It is YOU looking for the sensationalism. Don't blame others for YOUR problems.

Kind of a funny question. No Republican believes that Covid is real until they get sick. So it's pretty obvious that Democrats would poll higher.

Covid19 is real. It's an exceptionally mild variant of the covid/SARS series of viruses. Like the others, it does not kill.

Every liberal media outlet says the same thing. The % of those who die, or need hospitalization is very low. The sheer numbers of Republicans that are getting sick/hospitalized makes it appear that the numbers are higher, because they're jamming up the hospitals.

Covid19 does not kill. You are making shit up.

Covid19 does not kill. You are making shit up.

Right, just like traffic accidents don't kill, no need to fear traffic accidents, ain't the accident that kills you, just the head or body injury suffered due to the accident, but the accident itself ain't going to do you in, no need to worry

How about this survey? That’s a pretty remarkable survey.

The average righty thinks there’s a 50/50 chance believe Trump won the election. That’s funny but it’s not, really. People are going to be psychologically damaged by this.

Poll: Majority of Republicans Believe Trump’s Lies About the 2020 Election

https://www.politicususa.com/2021/05/25/poll-majority-of-republicans-believe-trumps-lies-about-the-2020-election.html

According to the latest national poll from Reuters/Ipsos, a majority of Republicans have fallen for ex-President Donald Trump’s “big lie” about the 2020 election and fully believe that the election was rife with fraud and abuse despite all evidence to the contrary. The poll found that 53% of Republicans believe Trump is the “true” president of the United States compared to 47% who said Biden won the election fairly. 56% of Republicans said the election results were “the result of illegal voting or election rigging.” Additionally, 39% “strongly” agreed and 22% “somewhat” agreed that the election was “stolen from Donald Trump.”

Some people should be ashamed of themselves.

You can't wish the evidence away, dude.

My first messageboard was Bill Maher - early 2000's.Life is Golden was there and ALTHEA

Maher is what Dems used to be. Practical and for the working man, not authoritarian elitists

Democrats have always been authoritarian elitists. They were never for the working man, though they claim to be.
