Mayer castigates liberals for Covid cluelessness

During his appearance on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” this week, the 65-year-old “Real Time With Bill Maher” host cited a survey in the New York Times — “which is a liberal paper so they weren’t looking for this answer,” Fox News reported.

“The question was, ‘What do you think the chances are that you would have to go to the hospital if you got COVID?’ And Democrats thought that was, way higher than Republicans,” Maher said. “The answer is between 1 percent and 5 percent.”

He said 41 percent of Democrats thought it was over 50 percent, while 28 percent thought it was between 20 percent and 49 percent of patients ending up in the hospital.

“Seventy percent of Democrats thought it was way, way, way higher than it really was,” Maher added. “Liberal media has to take a little responsibility for that. For scaring the s— out of people.”

That’s a pretty remarkable survey.

The average lefty thinks there’s a 50/50 chance they’ll wind up in the hospital if they catch the Bat Lady’s designer bug. That’s funny but it’s not, really. People are going to be psychologically damaged by this. I wonder how many of them are kids or young people.

Some people should be ashamed of themselves.

The lie filled propaganda works great on Democratic constituents. Gullible, dumb and arrogant.

What do you expect? We now live in the post-truth era.

Misinformation rules the day. The media has been fully discredited, as have most of the science community. People get their "facts" from all kinds of bad sources.

Is should be a win for you, right?

This from a twit who bought into the Russian collusion bullshit during the Trump Presidency. You dullards have no shame or self awareness do you?

:eyeroll:

What mental abuse? Explain.

So Bill is lying about his source? Is that what you are claiming?

That is not my claim. All I want is to read the article in question. I tried looking for it.

Thought this was odd. The NY Times doesn't take polls. This was a Gallup Poll that the Times merely reported. Both Republicans and Democrats misunderstood the effects of Covid, according to the poll, with Republicans underestimating them and Democrats overestimating them. Here is the relevant part of the story:

"More than one-third of Republican voters, for example, said that people without Covid symptoms could not spread the virus. Similar shares said that Covid was killing fewer people than either the seasonal flu or vehicle crashes. All of those beliefs are wrong, and badly so. Asymptomatic spread is a major source of transmission, and Covid has killed about 15 times more Americans than either the flu or vehicle crashes do in a typical year.

Democrats, on the other hand, are more likely to exaggerate the severity of Covid. When asked how often Covid patients had to be hospitalized, a very large share of Democratic voters said that at least 20 percent did. The actual hospitalization rate is between 1 percent and 5 percent.

Democrats are also more likely to exaggerate Covid’s toll on young people and to believe that children account for a meaningful share of deaths. In reality, Americans under 18 account for only 0.04 percent of Covid deaths."

What this says to me is that Americans by and large are very poorly informed even about matters that are widely and accurately reported in the news.

Google NYT: NY times poll on opinions about hospitalization rates for Covid. You have to subscribe to read their BS.

Thank you.

I know I always ask this but I need source for that. If that figure is accurate, wouldn't that be 5,000 out of 100,000?

I sourced it in the link but why would you question it? Or are you out to prove the OP point lol?

If it’s not accurate it’s in the ballpark. For every hospitalization there’s around a hundred infections at home watching Star Trek reruns while they nurse a fever for a few days. Sounds about right.

See my post above. Thank TD for being reasonable for once.
