House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said he stands with Trump.

“I, and every American who believes in the rule of law, stand with President Trump against this grave injustice,” McCarthy, a staunch ally of the former president, said in a tweet.

House Republicans, he added, “will hold this brazen weaponization of power accountable.”

Ron DeSantis of Florida, Trump’s chief rival for the Republican presidential nomination, responded to Trump’s indictment on Twitter, saying that “the weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society” and seeming to question why Hillary Clinton and Hunter Biden had not faced charges. But he stopped short of saying he would pardon Trump if elected, instead promising that he would “bring accountability” to the Justice Department.

All that noise from the rightys, but now you know why we have such a big cast of characters running for the Repub nomination. Plenty of highly connected people saw this coming. They also are certain Trump will be found guilty. The opening is there.

McCarthy is attempting to keep his job as Speaker by appeasing the nutjobs. He'll give Trump a Rusty Trombone all the way to prison if need be, just to hang on to the Speaker's gavel.
