Naaa, crack cocaine is essentially a form of free base coke. Powdered coke that you snort is in the form of a sodium salt. It cannot be smoked as it will just decompose to CO2 and water. Crack is made by taking the sodium salt of cocaine and removing the sodium cation from the cocaine molecule. This is usually done be dissolving the powder cocaine in a weak sodium carbonate solution heating and adding a small amount of ammonium. The free based cocaine then precipitates out of solution and when stirred will form a clump that looks like "a crack of soap" and thus the name. The free based version of cocaine, when smoked, doesn't decompose but volatilizes into a cocaine vapor that when inhaled almost instantaneously passes through the alveoli of the lungs and into the blood stream having an almost instantaneous impact on the brain which dumps a large concentration of dopamine into the brain causing an incredible, but short lived, euphoric feeling. Which explaines crack/freebase cocaines addictiviness. Only nicotene is more addictive and deadly.

Crack is way easier to make then meth if you can get powdered cocaine. Meth is really a poor mans coke. The same principle in making crystal meth (aka, ice) applies as with crack. You're tacking an amphetamine precursor in the form of a sodium salt and removing the sodium cation so that it can be smoked. The advantage of smoking being that the drug is more rapidly absorbed into the system with a near instantaneous high.

Freebase and crack are essentially the same thing in terms of the product that is produced from the chemical reaction. Freebase uses polar solvents like ether or pet ether because it gives higher yields (nearly 100%) where as crack gives yields of around 80%. Freebase also tends to precipitate as a fine powder and does not agglomerate like crack into a rock. The chief advantage of crack is that the chemicals are much easier and cheaper to obtain and much safer to handle.

Personally I don't think meth being endemic to rural areas has much to do with politics or economics so much as location. How are you going to set up an illicit meth lab with all the chemicals and apparatus that it requires and not be noticed in an urban environment? I'd say that meth is more endemic in rural areas because it's a lot easier to set up a meth lab in a rural area and not get detected. That and one of the main ingredients in the process (ammonia) is more readily available in rural areas too as it's a common fertilizer. To cook up crack, all you need is a beaker, water, backing soda, household ammonia and a microwave. Making crystal meth is a lot more complex and requires more chemicals and apparatus.

Crack is cocaine prepared with baking powder and smoked. Because it's smoked, a lot more gets into your system, and it gets there a lot faster, so it's cheaper to get an equivalent hit to what snorted cocaine would get you.

It all depends on how you take it. Smoking/shooting something is naturally going to make it more addictive.

Topper I've been to rural Louisanna where a public high school education is equivalent to a 6th grade education in Ohio. Here up north our rural high schools are some of the best in the state and most farm kids I grew up with in the small farm towns I grew up in in Ohio and Iowa went to college and did very well.
