Michelle O attacks "white flight". Obama mansions are in WHITE NEIGHBORHOOD

How much gentrification do you think is actually going on in this country? The statistic I read is 8% since the year 2000. Apparently there's a lot more of it in and around SF than the rest of the country. I confess to not knowing as much about gentrification as you do. If whites move back to minority neighborhoods how does that force out minorities? It sounds to me like gentrification is defined as black neighborhoods being all poor and crumbling with white people swooping in to save them, but that's not true.

Michelle's right. In many neighborhoods whites move when more non-whites move in. My former neighbors, a couple of racists, told me they'd move if blacks came onto the block. I would bet there's more white flight than gentrification going on in this country.

Gentrification isn’t unique to the Bay Area. And by definition it is race neutral because it’s really anyone with money moving into a poorer area and causing property values to rise. Generally speaking though it whites who more into largely minority neighborhoods. And the argument is property values rising forces the current (minority) residents out.

The first gentrifiers were gay folks, artists and hipsters. Today you even have empty nester baby boomers who are retiring and want to live in a urban setting with more activity around them.

So the argument is the gentrifiers are breaking up these existing communities. I mean I get it, if you’ve lived somewhere a long time and now can’t afford it that would suck. But times and neighborhoods do change.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess you'd have to have a whole lot of "gentrifiers" moving in to cause everyone's property values to rise. Is that accurate?

Generally would need a good number of people to move in for a neighborhood to fully change. What happens is once new residents start moving in then more services (restaurants, bars, coffee shops, grocery stores etc) follow which makes the area more desirable.

It’s a catch 22 for existing residents. You want more services for your neighborhood but getting those services makes your neighborhood more desirable. People move in, rent goes up and that’s how they cycle goes.

Tying it back to the topic there are folks who call the gentrifying of neighborhoods like this racist. But it’s an act of (largely but definitely not limited too) white people moving into minority neighborhoods.

IOW I voted for a person who I thought would be the best, the same reason you voted for trump. No matter how much you and the other cons criticize Obama, he is and always will be head and shoulders over the lying narcissistic crook in the WH.

I did not vote for Trump. I certainly did not vote for HRC. As a matter of record, this was the first time I did not vote at all for President and I hold that right dearly. Obama is a sham. He is proving it now and could care less. Others saw that when he was running the first time. We just wish you Democrats would look for more than just a "D" after some idiots name to vote for them.

You appear to be a trump supporter, though. I haven't seen you write anything critical of him. It's ironic that a trump supporter would call Obama a sham.

He's only a sham to you because you are a conservative and it's your job to bash any liberal.

I am a President supporter. Have even stuck up for Obama when he was done wrong or wrongly accused. My record clearly shows that as well as being critical of Trump and Bush and Clinton and.....pretty much everyone but Reagan. Democrats have become unhinged against this President. I have no problem correcting all of their bullshit.

Trump has been shedding light on bad inner cities, but Media/Cummings always attack hi for even mentioning them.

trump getting on a podium and saying things like "Baltimore is a disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess" or that "Afghanistan is a safe place in comparison [to Chicago]" deserved attacks. trump didn't offer any help or suggestions to these cities that I heard of.

Conservatives defended these quotes yet bashed Obama for making the relatively mild comment that some Pennsylvanians cling to their guns and religion.

^ This couldn't be more true but I've seen another side. Here in Pittsburgh many minority neighborhoods lobby for more services, especially grocery and drug stores, and get turned down there, but not in the gentrified neighborhoods.

Mild comment my ass. He also said Treyvon could be his son, inciting violence. And didn't have LE back in the Faux Mike Brown case.

I've never seen your record on Obama. You came here when he was on his way out. But given the comments you've made about him here and in other threads, I find it hard to believe you ever defended him for anything.

Democrats have called out trump's lies and his crass behaviour since 2015 and conservatives always push back. I guess that's to be expected but I don't know how they can continue to fool themselves, because trump is simply unfit for the job. trump has always acted like Democrats are his enemy and I don't mean only those in politics. He has no concept of the term "loyal opposition." He demands loyalty to himself and woe to anyone who gets on his bad side. That's a bad way to go through life and even worse, to govern a country.

You just summed up the Obama administration and the current Democrat congress perfectly. I am willing to bet you cannot see that.

That’s the tough part and the catch 22 I reference. Many poor areas lack close by access to grocery stores and places with fresh vegetables. But when their areas get those services they become more desirable and ultimately more expensive.

I guess a conservative will have to explain to me how those comments are worse than what trump called two cities and the people in them. How is Obama's statement a criticism of the Michael Brown case?

"The death of Michael Brown is heartbreaking, and Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and his community at this very difficult time. As Attorney General Holder has indicated, the Department of Justice is investigating the situation along with local officials, and they will continue to direct resources to the case as needed. I know the events of the past few days have prompted strong passions, but as details unfold, I urge everyone in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country, to remember this young man through reflection and understanding. We should comfort each other and talk with one another in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds. Along with our prayers, that’s what Michael and his family, and our broader American community, deserve."

trump sure doesn't have Chicago LE's back, with his nasty comments about the police chief and the lie that the chief is perpetrating a city crime wave.
