To tame the wolf, get a bone. They can be dropped by skeletons and wither skeletons, obtained from chests in desert temples and jungle temples, or caught by fishing. Then walk up to the wolf and right click on it with the bone. It may take multiple tries and will consume your bone. After you tame it, you can make the dog either sit or follow you by right clicking on it. When it is tame, it will be sitting by default, so you will have to right click it to get it to follow you.

Do shut up you snivelling oik!! My youngest son Josh set up a server and programmed some Minecraft games with a guy from Germany.

Dogs are, to all intents and purposes, tamed wolves, which get a collar and change looks. A dog responds to sit/up/ attack commands and is very effective against mobs. To tame one, you need meat and/or bones. Approach the wolf and feed it by holding the object in your hand and pressing the action button. After several attempts, you can call it yours.
