You can raise the minimum wage all you want to, but as long as illegal labor is easy to acquire, wage depression will remain an issue. Also, the higher you make the minimum wage, the more incentive there is to hire illegals.

So, when liberal areas become sanctuary cities or sanctuary states, that hurts legal workers more than any lack of intervention on wages.

Think about how many businesses already hire illegals. In a lot of cases, these people are paid less than their legal counterparts. Thus, wage depression occurs.

At best, minimum wage is a local issue. The variance of cost of living throughout the country makes a federal minimum wage rather limited in utility.

When cities like San Francisco, NYC, and Seattle push for $15/hr minimum wages, that halfway makes sense due to the high cost of living in those areas. Forcing something like that on a small town in Arkansas would be economic suicide.

So, ultimately, states and cities are better equipped to declare minimum wages according to their own local cost of living.

However, if we look at the more expensive areas of the country, usually, the market itself already creates higher minimum wages without government intervention. Even low skill labor in San Francisco costs a lot more than it does in rural Alabama, and that's due to what labor demands, not government.

So, government intervention is largely irrelevant regarding the minimum wage.

Minimum wage laws are price controls. Price controls never work. They always cause shortages and misery. In Seattle, minimum wage laws are part of the reason why restaurants are leaving. Now there are NO wages where that business once was. Others are cutting back their staff. Those fired now make ZERO wages and service is poorer.

Wages (and any other prices) should be left to market forces.

There are many people who start businesses who don't take salaries themselves because they aren't in a position too nor can they pay their employees high wages.
