Misogynists in the news

A former USA Gymnastics team doctor, already accused of sexually abusing two gymnasts, is facing 16 more abuse complaints.

Dr. Larry Nassar, following allegations made by a medalist from the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and gymnast Rachael Denhollander, was recently fired from Michigan State University where he served as an associate professor at the school’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and as an MSU team physician.

Like Denhollander, many of the athletes worked with the doctor during his time at the university.

The Indianapolis Star obtained the Michigan State University police reports concerning sexual abuse allegations made since 1996 — the year Nassar was made the team doctor for USA Gymnastics.

Five of Nassar’s alleged victims, who spoke with the Star after the news outlet initially reported on the misconduct, claimed the doctor penetrated them with his finger and touched them inappropriately during their routine visits. Three of them said they were underage at the time of the abuse.

His current attorneys, Matthew Newburg and Shannon Smith, said the doctor was performing a legitimate medical procedure.

There are at least 20 complaints overall, coming from women who were between the ages of 13 and 20 years old.
