In America the news has usually been locally based. This usually kept it relatively free from ideology besides from whatever sensationalism sold more papers.

In europe, where newspapers were mostly nationalized long ago, they had communist newspapers, socialist newspapers, christian newspapers, liberal newspapers, etc... etc... every newspaper had an ideology. And it is still vaguely organized like that. I think that since cable news is national, it was inevitable that it would devolve into euro style ideological info-streams.
