As Muslims around the world bid Ramadan farewell, they also prepare for Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of the Muslim holy month.

Depending on the sighting of the moon, Eid celebrations will begin either on Tuesday (June 4) or Wednesday (June 5).

What is Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr means "festival of breaking the fast" and marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Traditionally, Eid is celebrated for three days as an official holiday in all Muslim-majority countries. However, the number of vacation days varies by country.

Erdogan: No step back from S-400 deal with Russia

Turkish president says US offer to sell Patriot missiles to Ankara is not as good as Russia's S-400 offer.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country would not step back from an S-400 missile deal with Russia - again defying US threats.

Last week, a top Pentagon official said the consequences would be "devastating" for Turkey's joint F-35 fighter programme and its cooperation with NATO if the country went ahead with plans to buy the Russian anti-aircraft weapon system.

"There is an agreement. We have determination. It is out of the question to take a step back from it," Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul on Tuesday.

He also said an offer from the United States to sell Patriot missiles to Turkey was not as good as the Russian offer.

Ties between the NATO allies have been strained over Ankara's decision to buy the S-400 missile system, which Washington says could compromise its F-35 fighter jets that Ankara is also set to buy.

According to reports, Salman al-Awdah is one of three clerics linked to the Sahwa movement on death row in Saudi Arabia and could be executed in the coming days

Despite several waves of state repression since the 1990s, the Muslim Brotherhood-inspired religious movement has maintained an influence over the years.

Although groups within the movement held a range of ideas, they believed in non-violence and supported an intersection between religion and politics.

Al-Aqsa: Palestinians killed as Jerusalem protests rage

Clashes continue to rage between Israeli forces and Palestinian demonstrators across occupied territories.

At least three Palestinians have been killed, according to local media, and hundreds more injured amid mass protests over new Israeli security measures at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

In the first incident, an Israeli settler killed an 18-year-old Palestinian man in the Ras al-Amud neighbourhood in occupied East Jerusalem, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The death of Muhamd Mahmoud Sahraf was confirmed by Israeli security and the Red Crescent.

A second Palestinian was also confirmed killed by live fire during the demonstrations that followed Friday prayers, officials at a hospital in Jerusalem told AP news agency.

OPINION: Palestinians have a legal right to armed struggle
The Palestinian Authority also reported that a third man was killed during clashes with Israeli forces in the West Bank.

The African Union (AU) has suspended Sudan's membership days after the military launched a brutal crackdown on protesters that killed dozens of people.

The AU's Peace and Security Department said in a post on Twitter on Thursday that Sudan's participation in all AU activities would be suspended with immediate effect - "until the effective establishment of a civilian-led transitional authority," which it described as the only way to "exit from the current crisis".

The announcement followed an emergency meeting by the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, after the violent dispersal of a protest camp in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, began on Monday.

At least 108 people have been killed and more than 500 wounded, according to the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD), while a health ministry official was quoted as saying the death toll stood at 61.

Supporters of former Minneapolis Police Officer Mohamed Noor are holding a rally at the Hennepin County Government Center, where he is scheduled for sentencing Friday in the shooting death of Justine Ruszczyk Damond.

In a statement, an organizer for Thursday's rally said the event is "a grassroots effort to seek justice for all citizens."

In April, a jury found Noor guilty of third-degree murder and second degree manslaughter for fatally shooting Damond in July of 2017. Damond had called police to report a possible sexual assault. The shooting happened when Damond approached the police squad car on the driver's side. Noor, who was in the passenger seat, shot Damond. She was unarmed.

Fisherman fear future as Malaysia mulls Penang reclamation plan

Plan to create three artificial islands off Penang's southern coast worries fishermen and environmental campaigners.

Penang's fishing community is at the forefront of a campaign to stop what critics fear will destroy fishing grounds, cause irreparable damage to the environment and undermine food security.

Their objections, backed by Malaysia's Fisheries Department, led to the project's rejection in 2017 after the filing of an initial Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) - a requirement for any reclamation project of more than 50 hectares.

With the federal government considering the state's application anew, the fishermen and at least 45 civil society groups from across Malaysia are appealing to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to block the project. They plan to march on parliament in Kuala Lumpur in July.
