Yes. NYC has a lot of those nutjob ultra-Orthodox racist Jews living there. They don't seem to be numerous anywhere else in the U.S., just NYC and Israel, where they are a minority, maybe 10%-20% but they're having lots of babies. Here is a story on one of their 'Messiahs':

The vast majority of Jews are pretty secular, even in Israel, which is why there was such a large backlash against Netanyahu's attempts to mainstream them and appoint some to Israeli court benches and other posts.
Personally, I believe that Orthodox Jews are closer to the practice if the Jewish faith than either Conservative or Reform Jews. In any faith, you'll find extremists.
