If you ever hung out in Portland, especially at that red brick 'park' they have there, you will get hit on by one or two. Apparently they find a lot of suckers among the university students there, Never ran into them anywhere else except the west coast.
I had an apartment next door to one that was rented by the Mormon Church for its missionaries. Never bothered even once by them, they even offered me their left over cans of food when they left. Decent stuff, from that survivalist operation they run. I've bought a few cases of the stuff from their store in north Dallas.

If you're a prepper, they've got a decent system. They don't carry brown rice, for some reason, though.
And, the cans are usually #10 cans, about 3 quarts or so, 90 ounces up to 120, depending on what is in it. The wheat flour is a good buy.

I lived there twice, once in the 80's before it got Californicated, and again in 1997, left in 1999; it had changed a lot in a little over 11 years. A nice aprt. downtown ran about $225-$350 in the 80's. In 97 they were hitting double that, but still cheaper than Bay Area efficiencies. I went to Beaverton instead. I liked the park and the bike trails, but the rest of it sucked compared to the 80's. Liked weekend road trips around Oregon and Washington, though, cool countryside and ocean views. I was never bothered walking around downtown, but then I'm not anybody's victim of choice, but yeah a lot of muggings and thuggery from left wingers running around trying to imtimidate Americans.
