My Niece Deploys Tomorrow!

Let me first say, I am proud as can be of my niece, she has really matured into an outstanding adult, with qualities I never thought she would ever have.

She was sort of a spoiled brat growing up, given a lot of attention and not much discipline, and as she developed into adolescence, she was a typical boy-crazy air head teenage girl. She was all about shopping, and guys... guys and shopping! She was so naive and ditsy too, almost to the annoying point of thinking it was cool to be like that! But after she graduated, something changed.

When she first told the family she had decided to join the Army, we thought... she's NOT serious! She'll change her mind in a few weeks, but she didn't... she went through with it, and we all thought... oh, she is going to be in for a rude awakening, she'll never cut it! And she did! Not only did she cut it, she knocked down all kinds of honors in basic, from leadership to marksmanship, she finished in the top of her class. Amazing!

So now, she has finished all of her specialty training as a combat medic, and is ready to deploy to Afghanistan. I know she is well-trained, and completely capable of doing her job, and I realize her support role is not as dangerous as others, but I am totally worried for her. Knowing this administration is clueless as to what it's doing over there, and is destined to fuck it up some way, doesn't help me feel better about the safety of my niece.

Mucho props and respect, to your neice.

Great props. My Nephew is just finishing tech school and probably will be going out soon after.

I hope they both keep safe and return home with the experiences they wanted out of their service.

It never ceases to amaze me, so many young people somehow internalizing what is good and embracing in spite of the raucous noise from their 'elders.' I hope that all who enter the service keep safe and keep their faith in the goodness this country has meant exemplify. I wish somehow that we prove worthy of their sacrifices.

Second that and God Speed and safe passage to your niece, Dixie.
