N.J. lawmakers vote to ban death penalty

Didn't Phineas get a spike in his head? Been a while since my undergrad days of Brain and Behaviour 101 :o.

Good on Joizey! :clink:

No vengence is the other one. The government has no place in the vengence business. As a punishment goes, it is arbitrary, the race of the person you kill is a higher predictor of whether the state will bring capital charges or not. That and over 100 people have been exonerated of the charges they were sentenced to die for. The death penalty is a third world country punishment.

That is why we only invade 3rd world countries.

It's caused a bit of a hoopla because Megan Kanka's murderer is on death row in NJ. He tricked the 7 year old girl into his home by telling her he had a puppy, and then raped and strangled her.

I am against the death penality, but those cases always kill me. I have to be honest and say I'm ok with it in cases of child murder like that.
Good for you Darla, I agree.
But as well killing him COULD save more lives, Ted Bundy escaped twice and killed more young girls.
Had Bundy been given the death penalty, they would still be alive.

Vengeance or Justice?

There is a difference.

TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey will become the first state in four decades to abolish the death penalty under a measure lawmakers approved Thursday and the governor intends to sign within days.

Finally some rational thought about a punishment that just is not civilized nor applied fairly.

I agree that in the past it hasn't been applied fairly. Which is why I believe anyone put on death row prior to 2000 should have their sentences commuted to life without parole.

I suppose it is just a matter of opinion as to whether it is more civilized than life without parole. Personally, I think it far more cruel to keep someone locked in a cage with no hope of ever getting out. I also think in cases like McVeigh, Bundy, Manson etc... it should be used. Also in cases like the one Darla mentioned.

There is nothing just about the DP. People spend years on death row. I know you righties would like to see executions right after, hell lots of righties are so blood thirsty they want the executions to take place RIGHT after. The biggest complaint you will hear from righties is that the appeals take to long. Well the average time from sentence to exoneration is 9.5 years, so if righties had their way, those 126 that were exonated would have been executed. Ahh well not much of a loss when you are on the road to justice huh?

Execution is irreversible, if the state executes someone wrongly they have murdered under color of law. Hell they murder under color of law anyway, every state puts homicide on the death certificate of the executed. They are just "justified" homocides. If you are wrong then you have no justification. Like the guy that crawled in his neighbors window and choked him to death because his daughter falsely accused the neighbor of touching her. You aren't justified killing the innocent just because you THOUGHT they were guilty. Death penalty is vengence and that is all it is.

I'm asking questions only. The whole "you righties" remark missed its target.

So, you believe that somebody who is caught red-handed torturing and killing children would find no Justice in the DP?

FYI - I do not, and have not supported the DP for a very long time. However, it isn't because of "vengeance" or any of those other excuses. I think death is a kindness rather than living forever with your new husband Billy-Bob.

None. And it debases us as a society. You may want to pretend that it means nothing that we are in the same company as China and Saudi Arabia and Iran but it does. Even Russia has done away with capital punishment. And the rest of the civilized world has too. We are the ONLY industrialized nation that kills people for killing people to show that killing people is bad,

And again. You are missing your target. I don't pretend anything of the sort.

The reality is many people do see justice in taking what they have taken from another, the right to life.

It appears that Hammurabi's code has become a central theme in the US. An "eye for an eye"...

A man was just released from prison after spending 30 years in jail for a crime DNA evidence now proves he did not commit.

He was not an anomaly in the US InJustice System.

"Supreme Court delays Alabama execution; take action now to secure DNA testing

The U.S. Supreme Court delayed the execution of Tommy Arthur Dec. 5 in Alabama due to lethal injection challenges. Arthur has claimed his innocence for 25 years, and the Supreme Court's stay provides time for Gov. Bob Riley (left) to grant DNA testing that could prove Arthur's innocence or guilt.

US courts and prosecutors fight tooth and nail against entering DNA evidence in trial .. not because it isn't conclusive .. but because it is. Prosecutors are more concerned about conviction numbers on their record than justice.

How many innocent people have we murdered for crimes they did not commit?

And this is the main reason I don't support the death penalty. Killing an innocent would be, and likely has been, the most heinous injustice to be committed by society.

Vengeance is only one aspect.
1. Executing criminals brings relief to victims peace of mind.
2. Ensure they cannot escape and kill again like Ted Bundy did and others.
3. Ensures they are not let out on early parole by some of those wonderful Liberals who always tell us the DP is wrong and that they should be locked up for life instead (which of course starts NOT occuring).
4. Protects prison guards from being killed.
5. Protects other less violent criminals from being killed.

Yep the biggie reason why I so hate the Iraq invasion/occupation.
Perhaps up to 1 million death penalties handed out in Iraq.

The possibility of executing an innocent person zings the death penalty every time. The death penalty is, because of that possibility, indefensible.
