What has this country become? Why is it so hard to get people to take responsibility for themselves?

Sure, there will be times when we all get knocked down and a hand up is always nice, but we are out of control with the regulations and taxation. We need to elect leaders who will give this country back to the people. Both parties have shown time and again that they are not capable of anything other than corruption. The time for true change is upon us. Not the faux change from one party's leadership to the other, then back again.

Interesting that the developed nation in the world with by far the smallest welfare system has the most people whining about how ridiculously large it is.

Really Water???? We have the smallest welfare system? We have by far the largest economy in the world. Our government raises almost 2.4 TRILLION in taxes that they spend each year. That by itself is larger than all but a couple of the entire economies of any other country. So please explain to me just how you calculate that our system is smaller?

Also, this thread is not solely about welfare, but about the complete waste that our government shoves down our throats year in, year out.

1960 was the last year the idiots in DC lowered our national debt in a fiscal year. 1960.

For Christ sake, assume I mean per capita, SF. If we compared totals it would just be ridiculous, our welfare state would be 20 times "bigger" than nations that spend 50% of their annual income on welfare like Sweden.

We are run by closet socialists and theocratic idiots.

God Bless America!

I know. What happened to the moderates? Both parties seem to continue going towards the views of their very vocal minorities rather than towards the more moderate majorities within their parties. We need to find someone that is truly fiscally conservative and socially moderate-to-liberal. Unfortunately, even if we find such a politician, they have zero chance of getting their parties nomination.

I mean, think about it. For one thing, because we don't have a cost-effective government healthcare system like France, that's an automatic 5%-10% of our total GDP down the drain, 5%-10% of your purchasing power gone.

Welfare, if applied cost effectively, doesn't hurt the economy. It can even help the economy, if it is applied cost effectively, becuase it ensures stability and therefore makes the people happier.

The problem with people like Reagan was that he concentrated all of his rage on the welfare system without touching the economic restrictions at the base of our economy, because doing so would be less possible, and wouldn't give him as many good slogans.

It was Denmark I meant, and I was referencing the 2006 numbers. I wasn't aware that the 2007 numbers were out yet. They must have just been released.

The problem with people like you Water is you spout out crap without having even a slight foundation of knowledge on the topic. Let me guess, one of your teachers told you about the evil Reagan and you bought it hook line and sinker.

The problem with our welfare system is there are not enough restrictions on who can use it. There should be an education component. If you apply for welfare, you have to take classes to learn a skill set that will help you get off of welfare. THAT is how it should be set up. Couple it along with a time limit for how long you can remain on welfare.

Anyone wanna educate me on British style 'workfare'? I've heard it referenced several times but I don't know if it's just a rose by another name or if it actually works and discourages dependency.

Yeeah SF. Here in Mississippi, all the teachers are liberals who hate Reagan and love gays.

I think that most welfare system should simply be universal.

The "welfare" that you're talking about isn't commonly given out and takes up an almost irrelevant portion of the budget. If we completely abolished it your taxes wouldn't even go down half a percentage.

Ok, honest mistake on your part. Still, take a look at the more socialist countries like France. Take a look at what keeps the US from being the best...... interference from the government.

Also, when you compare countries, you have to try to compare countries of somewhat similar size. Small compact countries like Denmark are far easier to run. It would be similar to running a state the size of Rhode Island with the population of Massachusetts. You don't have the massive infrastructure costs that a country the size of the US has. You have more cost efficiency in healthcare because you have a highly concentrated population.

Yes, but I wasn't talking about Denmarks welfare system, I was talking about their economic freedoms.

France is larger and more spread out. I don't see any reason it would be more difficult to run the system in America.
