NC state police shoot & kill deaf man

A North Carolina state trooper shot and killed 29-year-old Daniel Harris — who was not only unarmed, but deaf — just feet from his home, over a speeding violation. According to neighbors who witnessed the shooting, Harris was shot and killed "almost immediately" after exiting his vehicle.

He appeared to be trying to communicate with the officer via sign language.

"They should've de-escalated and been trained to realize that this is an entirely different situation," neighbor Mark Barringer said. "You're pulling someone over who is deaf, they are handicapped. To me, what happened is totally unacceptable."

Police claim they attempted to pull Harris over for speeding, but he continued driving home instead of pulling over. Whether Harris fully understood what was happening, since he could not have heard the sirens, is unclear. His family, including his siblings, are also deaf and could often be seen communicating with each other via sign language in the neighborhood.

Something is seriously wrong with how our police officers are trained. Is it too much bleed over from the military?

Maybe it's something else, like general disrespect of authority, or refusing to accept personal responsibility.

Nah- much easier to blame the military.

If the officer's bullet was the same diameter as the barrel of his gun, why didn't it blow up in his face?

How's that PE? :rofl2:

While this is tragic, how were they supposed to know that he was deaf.
The Police aren't the ones who make policy on what's on a Drivers License or immediately available on a vehicle registration.

More then likely, all they knew was that they had an uncooperative traffic stop; that apparently escalated.

I'm wondering how he was able to get DL, if he was deaf; unless the deaf angle is being blown bigger then it really was.

USFREEDUMB never met a killer cop she couldn't defend.

Sign language is punishable by death. It is unAmerican. If you can't learn to speak like good citizens, then you shouldn't expect anything less than summary execution. Deaf lives matter.
