And people travel from all over the world to be treated in our health care system because it is one of the best if you can afford it. Approximately 35 % of ER visits go unpaid for that cost has to go to other people. For example. I took care of a illegal immigrant with new onset seizures . I had to treat a stop his seizures and investigate the cause . That require extensive lab work and then a MRI of his head. It turned out he had CYSTICERCOSIS also known as pork tapeworm. The Pork tapeworm enters through under cooked pigs raised in filthy conditions then travels to the brain and lays eggs which hatch then calcify. His care required nurses lab technicians respiratory therapists Radiologists ER doctors interests and neurologist helicopter pilots paramedics and lots of expensive supplies and equipment. I have treated TWO of these patients and both were from Mexico and both paid ZERO for there care. Should he get care ABSOLUTELY 100% but he should get it in Mexico we have enough poor Americans that deserve care also. There are tens of thousands of stories like his. The US can't be all things to all people. We don't need to import millions of more poor people. We have enough as it is. BTW I didn't get paid to take care of either of those two patients and I would take care of them gladly again if I had to. I have never been highly motivated by money I worked hard and live within my means. But hospitals have to pay nurses techs etc and those expenses have to be paid by some one.
If the rest of the world can give good care to their people at less than half the cost of ours, we can too. We're 47th down on the list of countries with highest life expectancies, and 50th on the list of infant mortality by country. Since we're forced to pay the most money because of corporate greed, we should be getting a better bang for the buck than this.
