New York public school makes learning Arabic mandatory

Rationalist

Hail Voltaire
An upper Manhattan public elementary school will be the first in the city to require that students study Arabic, officials said yesterday.

Beginning next semester, all 200 second- through fifth-graders at PS 368 in Hamilton Heights will be taught the language twice a week for 45 minutes — putting it on equal footing with science and music courses.

More PC horseshit from the left. Rather than teach the children a language they might actually use, they decide to suck up to Arabs and their caveman religion/culture. Disgusting. Maybe they'll also replace detention with public beheading?

Teaching kids Arabic? How terrible. It's not like Arabic has the 5th most native speakers in the world behind Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, English and Hindi or anything. They should teach the kids something useful, like Italian or something.

Also, too, there may be a bigger problem with this school if two 45 minute Arabic classes puts it on par with science. It's probably a good idea for kids to have a bit more than 90 minuted per week of instruction in science.

That's about right for Science. The more emphasis the state(s) put on reading and math scores (not that that's a bad thing) and school funding the further you'll see courses like science and foreign language pushed to the background, especially on the elementary level. It's a squeaky wheel thing.

As to the OP, I'd be very tempted to take my kid out of that system and put him and his talents somewhere else. Unless one thinks Obama is really a Muslim and is going to make this a Muslim nation after he is re-elected or one wants his kid to be a spy in the middle east, I don't see as much a need for Arabic as I see for Spanish.

Sure Spanish is more spoken but think about it this way, many high schools also offer German, French and Japanese, how many people speak those in comparison to Arabic. Replace French with Hindi and German with Mandarin and then we'll talk, until then, the argument that Arabic is a useless language doesn't hold much water.

The difference is that those languages are optional; students are free to choose which languages they would like to learn (I chose French). By contrast, this is imposed. It is merely another attempt by the left to pander to Arabs and their primitive culture.

Its a pretty useful language.

Didn't say it was useless, I said I didn't see as much need for it as I do for Spanish.

look it's very obvious the school distract did this to troll the whole nation. obv spanish and chinese would be a much more useful language to teach

imagine being in charge of a district, and then picking a topic to teach, KNOWING that it's going to piss so many people off, but when people complain they have almost nothing they can say against it. If you taught french, no one would complain, so they have zero ground to stand on. you do this all the while you chuckling to yourself. the people that make these decisions have to be a 10 year older version of me.

i would suggest that depending where you live, spanish would be useful

however, madarin chinese and arabic would also be good as non-indo-european languages and useful for business
