New York State Referendum Ballot re: Casino Gambling

In California they initially claimed lotto ticket revenue was 'additional revenue' going to help the schools. What they eventually did is use the lotto money to replace the funds directed towards the schools. Total scam.

Our whackjob governor wants to flout the state constitution and outsource the lottery to a private firm. It's all such a scam.

$25 Billion to Education...and Counting

Since 1985, Lottery players have contributed over $25 billion to help create more educational opportunities for California’s students. With the help of these funds, public schools are able to attract and retain quality teachers, buy classroom supplies and state-of-the-art equipment, and keep important programs running. But none of this would be possible without our players.

Do you understand that the lottery was sold as something that would bring in additional revenue for the schools and instead was used as replacement for previously earmarked money? So lottery money is not doing what it was promised.your link is crap

Evince, just be honest that the money was used to fund tax cuts, essentially. That doesn't negate the whole lottery program, but it is kind of bogus. QUit attaching yourself to stupid arguments.

the money goes to schools.

The right likes to cut taxes and you support that.

so why you bitching about the very shit you support?

No, you don't. Not a bit. Stop changing the subject you idiot.

Here, try this referendum on for size and maybe you'll get the point of the thread:
I'm not changing the subject, moron. You referenced regressive taxation, and have, thus far, failed miserably at defending your flawed opinion.
Now either you defend the position, or retract the comment.

Don't try to change the subject, just because you have egg on your face.

If lottery money were used to fund education, I'm thinking we'd have seen severe reductions on our local tax burden.

Never happened, never will. Especially given the ugly fact that most lotteries never pay the supposed 'jackpot'.

Ehhh, since I started the thread, I'm pretty confident I know what it's about a bit more than you.

Moron.

Casino gambling is considered a regressive tax that fills the government's coffers at the expense of the less fortunate, like; cigarette taxes, beer taxes, lotteries, etc.

But that's not the issue being discussed here, so can we make an effort to get through at least the first one or two posts of the thread without hijacking it?

The issue was the language of the referendum and whether or not it is appropriate?

Seems like the "purposes" for proposing the legislation were clearly stated. Do you claim those purposes are untrue? If they are true, then it seems the language is appropriate.

Lotteries are for people who failed statistics. :)

"The Lottery, with its weekly pay-out of enormous prizes, was the one public event to which the proles paid serious attention. It was probable that there were some millions of proles for whom the Lottery was the principal if not the only reason for remaining alive. It was their delight, their folly, their anodyne, their intellectual stimulant. Where the Lottery was concerned, even people who could barely read and write seemed capable of intricate calculations and staggering feats of memory. There was a whole tribe of men who made a living simply by selling systems, forecasts, and lucky amulets. Winston had nothing to do with the running of the Lottery, which was managed by the Ministry of Plenty, but he was aware (indeed everyone in the party was aware) that the prizes were largely imaginary. Only small sums were actually paid out, the winners of the big prizes being non-existent persons."

In WA we have no fucking clue how much goes to fund education because the state (after selling the Lotto on education) dumped it into the Black Hole/General Fund. The BH/GF is so badly wasted that the state refuses to release numbers on it or be audited.

Lottos are for the poor people.

They take advantage of them but they love them.

the phsycology of being poor is surrounded by having no hope.

when a poor person buys a lotto ticket they hold for a few seconds HOPE that they will be transported into a life of freedom from want.

I never bought into though I was dirt poor for many years.

I was always to much a cheapskate to buy lottos

Thats what lottery is all about the hope and belief one day your going to be on easy street.

Id bet no state knows where the lottery money really goes. Um change that to the citizens dont know

Well, no. No you don't. You happen to be against casinos. When they were going to run by 'Indians' only, so was I. Now there is a referendum that will allow the state to reap all the rewards, as opposed to getting a pittance based on revenues that nobody would be able to review.

How am I doing so far, moron?

So you claim there is some sort of regressive tax. You've yet to provide proof of same.

Are you still with me, shithead?

So vote against casinos. I'm voting for them. Not because I believe they will hold up their promises, but because the region is so depressed, we have virtually no choice.

Now, why not show us how informed you are, dickhead?

why should your local tax burden go down? Do you now want to pay your fair share?

Don't be so greedy. Do it for the chillen.
