NFL: League NOT seeking mandate for players to stand during anthem

The NFL said on Friday it has no plans to mandate players stand for the U.S. national anthem, but will rather present a possible solution on how to end the controversial protests when it meets with team owners next week.

Commissioner Roger Goodell, along with the head of the NFL Players Association, will meet with the owners from Oct. 17-18 in New York where the issue of player protests during the U.S. national anthem is expected to command much attention.

"(Goodell) has a plan that he is going to present to owners about how to use our platform to both raise awareness and make progress on issues of social justice and equality in this country," NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said on a conference call.

"What we don't have is a proposal that changes our policy, we don't have something that mandates anything. That's clear. If that was the case I doubt the head of the NFLPA would have put a joint statement out with us."

The statement released on Wednesday said Goodell invited NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith to the meetings and that the agenda will be a continuation of how to make progress on the important social issues that players have vocalized.

The protests, in a league where African-Americans make up the majority of players, have continued through the current season, with some players kneeling and others standing arm-in-arm in solidarity.

The gesture is intended to call attention to what protesting players see as a pattern of racism in the treatment of African-Americans by U.S. police.

The brouhaha over the NFL protests doesn't show any sign of slowing down as the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana is refusing to buy Ford police vehicles over the company's support of the players right to protest.

In a letter addressed to Hixson Ford of Alexandria, Sheriff Julian Whittington said "Ford vehicles have been greatly utilized within the law enforcement community" but his department "will no longer purchase Ford products as long as Ford sides with these who have no regard for the men and women who protect and serve this great nation."

The letter goes on to state it is Whittington's hope the letter will cause Ford to "change their advertising choices and cease to support the NFL with advertising dollars until the NFL leadership demands its players show proper respect to our nations colors." The letter goes on to say players have a right to protest but the sheriff's office also has the right to spend their money elsewhere.

As Fox News reports, Ford has previously stated "We respect individuals' rights to express their views, even if they are not ones we share. That's part of what makes America great."

Ford's situation is particularly interesting as the Ford family owns the Detroit Lions and owner Martha Firestone Ford has previously said “Thanks primarily to our players, the NFL ... has been a unifying force in our country and impactful change has and hopefully will continue to be the result of peaceful expression, done so in order to highlight social injustices of all kind."

She also rebuffed President Trump by saying “Negative and disrespectful comments suggesting otherwise are contrary to the founding principles of our country, and we do not support those comments or opinions.”
