Yes , it's staggering/shocking. Even taking into account the massive campaign of ballot fraud the Democrats ran, a large number of Americans voted Democrat. For any sane observer, it doesn't seem to make sense .As you rightly say, socialism is an evil, nihilistic "Death Cult"; why on Earth would any reasonably-minded American vote for it !!
Here's my very "quick and dirty" analysis...
(A) There the Millennials to factor in. A lot of them - and there are about 73 million in America today - are (literally) brainwashed by the existing education system in the US (esp. its high schools and universities) which are totally dominated by a leftist (neo-Marxist/Postmodernist) ethos. Something like 70% of millennials are believed to have voted Democrat in this year's election. So that's one way to make some sense out of the election statistics.
(B) Brainwashed is not necessarity the same as naturally stupid though, and a second factor that helps explain the reason so many people would vote Democrat of the is raw biological (genetic) stupidity (i.e, literally, low IQ ; IQ is 70%-80% genetically determined in adults) To explain.. There currently close to 50 million African - Americans in the United States. They have an AVERAGE IQ of 85 points, and about 80% of them voted Democrat in the 2020 election The other big racial/ethnic group in America that influences election results are the Hispanics, there are currently close to 61 million Hispanics living in America. With Hispanics, you are looking at an AVERAGE IQ of about 87 - 8 points. A clear majority of them - 68% - voted for Biden/Democrat in the recent election.
Why ?
Because stupidity (low average IQ) correlates with higher WELFARE DEPENDENCY. African - Americans and Hispanic have a relatively high rate of welfare dependency than white (European) Americans, mainly because, on average they are too stupid or lazy to keep themselves in gainful employment. But they are NOT THAT STUPID that they don't know the Democrats are the Party to vote for if you want to have more government benefits handed out to you; therefore the majority of these two large racial/ethnic groups vote Democrat.
So, if you do the math and - just to begin with - get a rough tally of how many Millennials + African - Americans + Hispanics voted Democrat, you see it alarmingly high. And when you consider the reasons WHY these groups voted Democrat, then you'll understand why America now looks destined to go down the socialist gurgler

Finally, the US 2020 election in the US, should teach any sane American that are left in the country, that..

* Somehow, the American education system MUST be drastically and immediately purged of the leftist poison that has currently overwhelmed it. How ? I honestly do not know.
* For the average White (European) American, democracy can longer be regarded as a workable system of government; not in a nation that has, since 1965s permitted massive Third World (colored) immigration across its borders. America already had a big enough social problem on its hands with the African-American descendants of slaves without adding another 61 million Hispanics (and other such 3rd-world races) into the country as well. Ideally, Immigration from the 3rd world must stop, and ideally some kind of program of repatriation should put in place to return third-world immigrants to America back to their countries of origin (I realize the later is almost certainly politically impossible now.)

I have to say that I do find it somewhat funny that most of the blue states are the states involved in the heavy handed lockdowns.
