Chefs Call Proposed New York Salt Ban 'Absurd'

Bill introduced by state assemblyman would ban the use of salt in New York restaurant cooking

Some New York City chefs and restaurant owners are taking aim at a bill introduced in the New York Legislature that, if passed, would ban the use of salt in restaurant cooking.

"No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises," the bill, A. 10129, states in part.

The legislation, which Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, D-Brooklyn, introduced on March 5, would fine restaurants $1,000 for each violation.

"The consumer needs to make their own health choices. Just as doctors and the occasional visit to a hospital can't truly control how a person chooses to maintain their health, neither can chefs nor the occasional visit to a restaurant," said Jeff Nathan, the executive chef and co-owner of Abigael's on Broadway. "Modifying trans fats and sodium intake needs to be home based for optimal health. Regulating restaurants will not solve this health issue."

This is pure insanity! Just another reason not to live in NY.

democrats hate being in power and love being the underdog, please let a NRA nut shoot this ahole.

Did anyone catch the extra insanity in this bill? I mean this part:
"food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises"

Technically that could mean foods a restaurant buys that already have salt in them when they were prepared like a jar of pickles or sauerkraut for instance.
And for those who think only New York will do this, you wait, other Liberal Democrats in other states will point out New York's results in lower blood pressure and the health savings to government healthcare and they will be clamoring for it too.

Not only will other states not be "clamoring" for this type of regulation, but New York won't pass it either. It's the stupidest fucking bill I have read about in a long, long time.

And, technically, that language means that take out cannot have salt in it but it doesn't matter anyway since it won't pass.

Obviously you don't know New Yorkers. Every damn one of them knows better then you. Just ax them.

Nitwit liberals across the country got transfats banned and it won't be long before smoking is a god damn felony in the US....banning salt, sugar and hambergers can't be far behind....

Did they not pass a transfat bill? What about other states with various other health bans?
You are relying too much on Liberal Democrats to have common sense, sort of like relying on Republicans to have modern art knowledge or Watermark to do his own laundry.

Personally I think there should be a law... if you put forth a bill this fucking stupid, we should be able to simply shoot you and move on. Call it the 'Helping Darwin' bill.

Yea! Next think you know them damned liberals will want to ban hemp, cuban cigars and political criticisms at Republican rallies.

Next they will have food police stationed at the exits of all grocery stores. Obese people will be fined for every item(s) that has trans fat, sugar, or salt above the federally regulated amounts (from the looks of this bill, that will be zero). If they put up a fight, they will be sentenced to jail for a period not to exceed 30 days and forced to complete government operated addiction treatment.

I disagree with this law, its silly.

But the people of NY seem to like this type of legislation, they keep voting for reps who propose such stuff.

That's why I moved. That's also why I don't care what politicians in locales do, but why I do care what national politicians do.

Or worse:
Someone will be sitting at home, enjoying a movie, and the police will kick in the door, point a taser at them, and then demand;

PUT DOWN THE POPCORN WITH THE EXTRA BUTTER AND DROP THAT SALT SHAKER

Don't taze me bro.
