THE QUESTION

Does the president control grocery prices?

THE ANSWER

The president does not control grocery prices in the U.S. Instead, “prices generally are set by sellers, and price change typically comes from market forces,” according to Steve Reed, an economist at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Market forces are economic factors that influence the price and quantity of goods and services, driving supply and demand in a market.

“There is no direct control of food prices by the president or any branch of government,” Reed told VERIFY.

Producers higher energy prices are passed along to consumers. The cost of energy shot up after Biden/HARRIS took office. Biden said he would eliminate fossil fuels he started restricting the sales of oil leases on Federal lands. That caused the cost of financing exploration of oil projects to go up and the cost of producing energy to go up.

The next president (Kamala Harris) will have few options to significantly or quickly lower food costs — though some voters believe otherwise.

I guess you didn't click the link so I'll highlight some of it for you.

"A March 2023 report on food prices published by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that not just one but multiple market forces can affect retail food prices. Some of the most recent factors include the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, global trade issues, weather events and climate change, as well as animal and plant diseases, such as the recent outbreak of avian (bird) flu, which “was partly responsible for the significant increases that we saw in egg prices,” according to Ortega.

“COVID-19 caused disruptions across the food supply chain. As U.S. households shifted away from full-service restaurant meals, they purchased more food at grocery stores. There were slowdowns in production at meat processing plants when workers became sick and plants shut down. Similarly, transportation of food was bottlenecked when truck drivers got sick,” the GAO wrote in an April 2023 blog post.

“The war in Ukraine also disrupted the global supply of agricultural commodities—such as wheat, corn, sunflower oil, and fertilizer. This reduction in supply, coupled with a U.S. drought, caused American consumers to see wheat prices increase,” the GAO added.

From 2016 the price of electricity increase 32 cents from 2021 From January 2021 to 2023 electricity has increase $2.13

The price of gasoline has climbed over a dollar during the Biden administration even with him selling off a lot of our SPR. Farmers use a lot of fuel. And fertilizers are made from fossil fuels and that has shot up after Biden/HARRIS took office..

  • 2006–2021: The average cost of fertilizer per acre was around $125, not adjusted for inflation.
  • 2021–2022: The price of fertilizer rose 28%. This was due to rising prices for oil, natural gas, and ammonia, which are key inputs in fertilizer production.
  • 2022: The average cost of fertilizer per acre was $225.78.
  • 2023: The estimated cost of fertilizer per acre was $186.73.
  • 2024: Fertilizer prices are expected to average lower than 2023, but remain higher than 2015–2019 levels.

Again these prices are passed a long to the consumer.

None of that is true. Zero. The Putin attack on Ukraine was a spur to inflation in food and energy, They took large amounts of both off the market. However, you cannot discuss food prices in America without talking about the huge control over food, that a couple of companies have.
Biden had more American oil drilled than was drilled forever. That should have cut the prices, and it did. It is 2.94 a gal near my house.

So Democrats want to excuse Biden/HARRIS because COVID increased in food prices but then want to blame Trump for governors shutting their economies down and the subsequent loss of jobs. Nice try. ;)

So Harris is an idiot when she says she wants price controls on groceries

Inflation started long before Putin invaded Ukraine. Biden took almost 4 year to reach the peak level of production that Trump did. Much of the oil that is now being produced is from the completion of DUCs Drilled uncompleted wells that were drilled during the Trump administration.

So let me get this straight if the president signs a bill that raises the minimum wage you don't think that has any effect on grocery prices?? If a president signs a bill that increases taxes on trucking companies to "combat global warming" you dont think that will effect the price of groceries? You're a raging idiot and are entitled to nothing but ridicule and insults.

Polls show that most Americans (both major parties and Independents) support Kamala's plan to ban price gouging.

Wut? It's not a matter of excusing or not excusing. It's about accepting expert facts instead of maga lies.
So it is aFCT that governors shut their economies down even though Trump wanted to keep them open. It is a FACT that closing economies down led to job losses. It is a FACT that Bartender ,and others here, LOVE to point out that Trump lost more jobs during his administration than any other President but the barkeep, and others, always fail to mention the effects of COVID on jobs. So you want to excuse Biden but you don't want to excuse Trump. Why?

Here's the deal pussycat.
Given a normal growing season for any given product, the cost to the consumer will be directly tied to energy prices. The sooner you understand that fact, the sooner you might sound smarter.
Yeah a lot of lettuce and tomatoes in the winter are grown in greenhouses which are heated with ENERGY. Then they are shipped using ENERGY.
