Friday Night Lights is a great flick. I have heard that it's a pretty true account of how some of those towns are.
The town I grew up in loved its HS football, but it wasn't anything like that, and the players - while being a bit more revered in school - never experienced anything like the worship or special privilege that I think some of these towns seem to allow for.
What sucks is that for every incident that gets reported like this, there are probably many that don't, simply because victims don't want to deal w/ the backlash.
