Oakland Loses the A's

Sad day for the country, but especially in Oakland, California as MLB owners vote to allow the A's to move to Las Vegas. Since this is a political board this falls on owner John Fischer and the incompetence of Oakland's government.

It's a proud city and the A's are a big part of the City's history. Oakland went from having three major professional teams less than a decade ago to none today. Sad sad day.

Yep, we lost the Dallas Texans, and they became the Kansas City Chiefs!

I know how you feel!

Does LV even have a stadium? They'll have to play indoors; no one wants to sit out in the Las Vegas sun in July and watch a game. Actually, most ppl who go to LV prefer gambling and shows, not sports-watching. What an odd choice of cities.

No stadium yet. (Well technically they have a minor league stadium for their AAA team, which is outdoors.) Las Vegas has proposed to build the A's a new stadium (which may or may not have a retractable roof) which is why the A's are leaving.

Las Vegas is a growing market (i'm only being partially tounge-in-cheeck when saying about 1/3 of southern california is moving there). They have the hockey team which gets tremendous support and the Raiders moved there (from Oakland of course) and they get good turn outs. But baseball is a different animal and I do not see how this is going to end well.

Eh, methinks the Las Vegas crowd will support the team better than Oakland. And that Oakland stadium was pathetic.
I was 16 when my Senators moved to become the Texas Rangers in 1972. I still follow them to this day.
World Champs, baby.

Oh, I disagree. Baseball is popular throughout the country and is great entertainment. Methinks they'll draw very well in LV.

Sports is a cruel business.

If you're a sports fan, you get it. I have a ton of empathy for A's fans on this. Not unlike losing a limb.

Once again you dont know what you are talking about. Both professional football and hockey are drawing, every night, a full house in LV. Baseball will be the same.

Well, the Braves played in Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta in my lifetime.

The A's were tied with Philadelphia, Kansas City, and Oakland,
but now they'll pull ahead.

The Orioles have also played in three cities, but only in St. Louis and Baltimore in my lifetime.
They played in Milwaukee in 1901, but I didn't actually see that.

Is the Bay area really big enough for two teams?
Boston wasn't.
I was a little kid when we lost the Braves in 1953.

We had A's season tickets growing up. I was in high school when they went to three straight WS in the late '80's. Back then the Coliseum was your run of the mill multiple purpose stadium that was typical of the '60's. Then when the Raiders returned in the '90's they made it worse by adding all the seats they called 'Mount Davis'. Today it's a dump which is why they had been working on a new stadium in Oakland. It was a bad combination of a horrible owner and incompetent City that couldn't get a deal done.

Oakland has arguably the most passionate fans in the league. But they weren't going to turn out for a real life Major League movie. The owner got rid of all the good players, took away the few fun areas inside the stadium and raised ticket prices. It's hard to turn out, no matter how passionate you are, when the owner is giving you the middle finger.

I have a good buddy that's a big developer in Las Vegas and had an outside role in this deal so he would keep me up to date. Even he said people in the City aren't all that enthusiastic about the team moving there. Once they are there it's possible that will change but I wouldn't bet on it. John Fischer is a horrible owner and people in Vegas are going to find that out.

I don't wish ill on many people but to be kind let's just say Fischer is not on my Christmas Card list. He is the worst kind of owner and even though I love the A's I can't root for them. I'm now homeless baseball wise.

The Bay Area can support two teams, we've done it for decades. The A's wanted to go to the South Bay (San Jose area) because there are more corporate dollars down there (the Giants blocked them).

I know many teams have moved. From an Oakland perspective the Raiders have moved multiple times and the Warriors just moved from Oakland to SF. But this one hurts.

why does the area suck so bad.

work on that issue.

Sports teams move, sports players move, all about the dollar, the A’s didn’t originate in Oakland, although the team that left KC was actually a Yankee triple AAA farm team

Having added the cynical, it is sad, historical team with many famous moments leaving, including the Al Michaels earthquake, his second best next to the Olympic hockey game. And I don’t know the reason, but everything bad seems to be happening to Oakland all at the same time

They’ll do fine in Vegas, if hockey could sell in the desert, baseball can, I still haven’t gotten use to the LV Raiders, always looking for Oakland in the point spreads

Yes, San Francisco is not Oakland,
any more than Queens was Brooklyn
to the disappointed Dodgers fans when I was a boy.

The arrival of the Mets didn't comfort them or old NY Giants fans either.

We lost the Braves, but still had the Red Sox who played in literally walking distance from them.

Still, the A's were a Philadelphia team
and they had to give them up
after a tradition of Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Lefty Grove, and Mickey Cochrane.

Like us, they still had the Phillies on whom to fall back.
Oakland may have to wait a while for a new team.

I wonder if they'll rename the team. Las Vegas A's sounds stupid. Las Vegas Gamblers?

Anything A's sounded stupid but it had tradition.

Las Vegas residents aren't enough to support the team.
There's no real metropolitan district around it--just a moonscape of rocks and sand.

Hotels will buy lots of tickets to comp guests.

Baseball season isn't the best season for Vegas unless you like three digit temperatures while you're walking the Strip.

Baseball as an added attraction might help business.

Maybe ppl will choose a game while their travel companion is gambling! I'm not much of a sports fan, but watching a game sounds more fun than watching my money get gone in a casino.

The gestapo hates boxing, and even hated my doing it when we were teenagers and just family friends.

When I used to go to the fights in Vegas,
she would take a bubble bath or something
and we'd meet up later for a late dinner.

The matches ended fairly early because they were synched to East Coast television time
so we could do that.

Even in nearby Manhattan, she stayed at the hotel when I took the kids to the fights at MSG.

People love free stuff,
and the hotels benefit from having free stuff to give to their good customers.
They'll definitely buy baseball tickets.

There seems to be enough residents to fill a hockey arena.

Hotels will buy lots of tickets to comp guests.

I'm sure they will, but there are more residents than you think in Las Vegas.
