Obama says Police acted stupidly!

It has nothing to do with being tough. It has to do with respect. I respect the fact that cops are willing to put their lives on the line for the rest of us every day. I respect the fact that they take a lot of shit almost every time they are called in and yet for the most part they don't snap. I respect the fact that if someone thought someone was breaking into my home and called the cops that they would bother to come and check. If it was me in this situation, I would have respected the fact that they were doing their JOB. I would have shown them my ID and thanked them for making sure my home was secure.

But that is just me. I know others feel 'outraged' that they would dare actually do their job.

To be clear, I also understand the difference between a white man such as myself being in such a situation and a black man being in it. I understand the skepticism and distrust the black community has towards the police. But the cycle will never end if when the cops are doing their job they have to put up with being berated like the professor did to them.

I want them to release those tapes so that we can hear the conversation and put an end to all the speculation.

Just my opinion.... take it for what its worth.

I think Gates was pissed.
He was tired, just got home, couldn't get into his house (through the front door), had to walk all the way around to the back door, and when the Officer showed up; Gates took out that frustration on him.
Once he was down at the Police Station, I bet you he calmed down and apoligized.

Why are the ones calling the Officer a racist, overlooking the little fact that Gates house had already been broken into once before and that's why the front door was messed up.

I agree completely, and I regret that the president spoke hastily on this subject.... and I think the president regrets that as well.

He regretted it when he saw it played back on the news and heard Americans say how stupidly he acted

Well, when he said he regretted saying it, I tended to believe him. I guess you just think he plays politics when he says things like that.

Now why did he regret it? Did it show us something about Obama he didn't want us to see? Or was it because it people were overwhelmingly taking the side of the cop and he didn't want his numbers to suffer?

We'll never know, but it is a reasonable opinion to hold that his advisors told him it would be a better thing than letting it continue to fester.

Keep in mind, Obama didn't apologize for what he said...he just said it could have been better said.

His core statement stands....black/hispanic men in this country are subject to unnecessary and unlawful stop and searches even when there is no cause for it. Gates may have been a loud mouth, but that is NO GROUNDS for a cop to arrest a man in his home once he ID's himself as the owner. That's why the charges were dropped in less than 5 hours.

Remember, Obama was ASKED his opinion/viewpoints....he didn't volunteer. And no matter how much America stamps their feet, he was right on the money.

Right on .... Obama shows himself to be a racist.....a race baiter following in the shoes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.....and obviously Gates and Rev. Wright....etc.:321:

i've read that the prof wasn't in his house when he was arrested, also, if nobody realizes that charges get dropped all the time for politically expedient reasons, well then they shouldn't really be participating in adult conversations.

Disturbing the peace almost always gets dropped after a cool down period. At least here it does.

And once again, our intellectually impotent neocon macho man of the discussion boards says nothing yet talks loud.

The cops ONE reason for being in Gates house was to determine if Gates was indeed who he said he was and the owner of the residence. Once that was established, Crowley had no case. His report shows that at no time did Gates lay hands on impede him in the course of his duty or that he had to be restrained. His report did not indicate that Gates was a danger to himself or others, or acting under the influence of drugs. Crowley had NOTHING but an irate and mouthy citizen IN HIS OWN HOME.

The charges were DROPPED in less than 5 hours, mastermind. If the cops had a lock, then why drop the charges?

All you can do is wail the same old blanket BS....Obama's a racist. Well, all you have to do is provide the quote where he makes a statement denigrating a particular racial or ethnic group, and you have a case. If not, then your just another frustrated little neocon clown. "Bravo", indeed! Carry on. :cof1:

 He was arrested outside of his door, but NOT off his property...unless you have a report saying that Gates followed Crowley down the walk and off his property line. The charge of "disturbing the peace" was a joke, being that he wasn't outside his door long enough for the neighbors (or the cops) to level that charge.

The charges were dropped because the basis of Crowley's report occurs IN THE HOUSE, NOT OUTSIDE THE HOUSE. That is absurd, given the circumstances that the man ID himself and his ownership of the house. That is why the charges were dropped, because they wouldn't stand up in court. Cops have a solid case, they don't back down regardless of political pressure...or did you forget Rodney King as a sterling example.

Next time, why don't you stop and THINK things through before you cop a condescending attitude....makes you look less foolish.
