MADRID — President Barack Obama should resign if it can be shown that he approved spying by US diplomatic figures on UN officials, the founder of WikiLeaks said in an interview published Sunday.

"The whole chain of command who was aware of this order, and approved it, must resign if the US is to be seen to be a credible nation that obeys the rule of law. The order is so serious it may well have been put to the president for approval," Julian Assange told Spanish daily El Pais.

"Obama must answer what he knew about this illegal order and when. If he refuses to answer or there is evidence he approved of these actions, he must resign," he added during an Internet chat interview published online.

WikiLeaks threw US diplomacy into chaos when it started releasing more than 250,000 classified State Department cables on November 28, creating an international firestorm as American diplomats' private assessments of foreign leaders and politics have been publicly aired.

According to one of the documents, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asked for UN personnel's telephones, emails, credit card details and frequent flier numbers.

We just haven't found out how to get rid of the vestiges of our European heratige. It usually manifests itself in us still acting like you at times and this seems to be one of those times.

Well, here's a switch. Most, if not all of the conservatives I read on this site hate the U.N. You should be doing somersaults over anything that makes the U.N. look bad.

Oh, wait. Only one thing can be worse than the U.N. and that's Obama. :rolleyes:

Umm Low, it's the duty of every citizen to question their government at every turn.
 
The thing is if people expected Presidents to resign for taking part in, or authorising illegal acts, then the US would likely have had over 10 times the number of Presidents they have now. As someone who has learned the list of American Presidents for the purpose of winning money out of quiz machines (my life is a rich tableau, no?) this would not be desirable.

Besides, i can't believe anyone working in the UN building would be unaware of the fact that at any one time their conversations were being monitored by at least a dozen security services.

As for the point of the article, I didn't think this was a secret. I mean, every other country with any sort of serious intelligence agency does the same.
