So, the minimum wage used to be $2.75 an hour. Are you contending that with the minimum having gone up to $8.00 (in Calif) all those businesses, like Mcdonalds have been losing money for all those years?

No; because they raise their prices and find ways to reduce their labor and automate when possible. Another inconvenient fact is that 25 states have a higher minimum wage than the Federal Government. You cannot arbitrarily raise all businesses costs and then expect it to not have a negative impact to markets.

The only real benefit of a dialogue for raising the minimum wage are political. By arguing for one, Obama knows that low information dunces will think he is doing something for them. This translates into votes even though the evidence suggests it will do nothing to improve things for the poor.

The highest double digit unemployment rates today are teens and young blacks. How does this improve thier situations?

Can you find any evidence where the minimum wage has raised anyone out of poverty?

What do you have against the working class? I thought you Liberals were all for the working class yet you constantly insult anyone who would be. Why is that? I had my lawn mower recently repaired; he was an Asian immigrant who owned his own business. What did he have to be ashamed about?

Companies typically raise their prices anyway or their margins would never increase and stocks would flatten out. A GM is looking for at least 18% a year, it all comes under the cost of living which is raised each year on average 2.8%; hence the 3% expected raise in your wages. The minimum wage has always been the cheapest labor that can be found legally in this country. When someone is making $8.00 an hour and has to fill their gas tank at $60, then that person only realized $4 for the day. That is why so many people forced into the minimum wage are on welfare and food stamps etc. The minimum wage is costing the government money that we ought not to be spending these days. The average kid; whom the minimum wage was originally designed for, has been pushed right out of the job market, yet the minimum wage part time employee is the new labor force: company loyalty has thus gone the way of the dinosaur as well. So, you’re wrong: the only real benefit for raising the minimum wage is to try and help people work up from poverty. This bottom line mentality of the corporate is about to be forced underground. People cannot afford to work for peanuts anymore: it’s bad for the economy. When labor unions were at their peak and wages and benefits were up, we had a much stronger economy in this country and lower unemployment.

They way to improve the situation for young teens and blacks is to provide more jobs. For instance, in the state of Oregon, people are not allowed by law to pump their own gas: it’s a hazardous material. So, the answer? Full service gas stations again, that create 18,000 jobs a year in that state. There are a myriad of ways that corp could serve the communities in which they operate instead of just taking everybody’s money.
