good for obama

You're correct, Good for Obama.
The reasons given in the article, are totally one sided.
Right or wrong, these are Americans that fought for what they believed in and the reasons given could be used to say that he shouldn't recognize those that died in Vietnam or anytime since then.

They were traitors. There should not be a monument to confederate soldiers at the same place where men who bravely defended the Union are buried.

Traitors to the United States of America. If a group of Moslem Americans took up arms against the US right now you would call them the exact same thing, and you would be right.

I'm not saying that I agree with what they did; but I do believe that they felt that the North was bent on destroying their way of life and their economy.

We're not talking a handful of individuals, or even a single State; but almost half of the United States.

Your attempt to correlate this with a "group of Muslem Americans", was wrong, undeserved, and is just a red herring.

Bullshit! If EVERY Muslim in this country took up arms against the US no matter what they thought about what the country was going to do they would be traitors. They wrongly thought that Lincoln was going to end slavery, which has been pointed out on numerous threads he SAID he would not do, and took up arms against the US. They were traitors plain and simple and the leaders rightfully were stripped of their citizenship, they should have been executed, as most of them, at the top, were West Point grads and took an Oath to protect and defend the US.

No different that the men who rebelled against the Crown in 1776. They were traitors to the British empire. The only thing that saved them was victory. Otherwise, as Franklin observed, they would have all hung separately.

You're entitled to your opinion, no matter how wrong it is.

Seeing as how we're not trying to force anything on any Muslim Americans, your attempted correlation carries no weight.

Actually, they weren't Americans.

Bad move....the whole concept of the "confederacy" treats the issue of slavery as a mere formality that would have eventually been solved (and besides, it wasn't all that important to the southern economy/way of life, and it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be). It's going to be real interesting to see if anyone is going to get a public platform to state this, and what Obama's explanation/justification will be.

I can't side with this in that they were defending their state against the encroachment of federal power. Their reasoning may have sucked, but it was valid at the time.

what united states of america? 50 states? what?

you sully this country by comparing the confederate to muslims. it shows ignorance. as if the south wanted sharia law....

Soc we agree a lot but this is total bullshit.

So, the Rebellious Colonists were not traitors then? The southern Officers were fortunate they were inhabitants of the same nation before and after the war or they would have been executed. We pretend they were not traitors because we are still living with the descendants of confederate soldiers and it is not "politically correct" to define them by their actions. Had they won, they would not have been defined as traitors because they would have been the victorious soldiers of the new Confederate States of America.

Bullshit. They were patriots standing up for the Constitution, the same as Jefferson, Washington and Adams - all traitors by your despicable standards.
