Obama's got an app for that...

I will give you another example of the state going totally OTT, our caring sharing ex Labour government wanted to create a database listing anyone who had any contact with children even if they were only parents driving their children's friends to school. Potentially it could have had up to 11 million records, one of the first things Cameron did when he gained power was to scrap the whole thing.

I've seen that documentary about the Titanic quite recently.

What was the purpose behind the database? I would think almost all parents, at one time or another, have contact with other people's chldren. Birthday parties, going out on Halloween, car pooling to sports events.....

It was supposed to be to detect paedophiles and child sex attackers but it was a typical scheme cooked up by politicians without any need to live in the real world. It would have covered nearly every activity where children were involved.

Unintended consequences are never thought about before hand. For some of the same reasons that so many hated the Patriot act, that I and other conservatives thought were absolutely necessary when enacted, and later grew to see that it could be abused by future administrations for their own purposes, is the same reason that I don't think that reasonable people want this kind of creepy intrusion that the app involves.

(Excerpt) Others fear that those who currently give up their time to help out in schools and clubs could give up rather than go through the hassle of registering. (End)

That's exactly what would happen. Furthermore, it's more likely such clubs and other programs would be staffed by perverts as they would be the ones most likely to persevere to obtain clearance. Few people are going to volunteer if it's a hassle.

I don't have a problem with the government having a database. My problem is the hassle of people having to register. Whoever runs the program can submit the volunteer's name but don't put the onus on the volunteer. It is easy enough to figure out who volunteered if a problem arose. Everyone knows who the volunteer is or could quickly find out whether it's written down in a government office or not.

As for the Patriot Act the problem isn't the list of names. It's the rules and regulations and the stripping of rights.

Let's face it. In today's world it's easy to plot out a person's movements whether it be by the use of their CC or cell phone tracking or cell phone messages, etc. When I cross the border my cell automatically tells me I have left the country. Anybody with a cell phone is being tracked 24 hous a day by a GPS systems. The same idea is being put in cars today. A phone call can have a satellite unlock the car doors. It won't be long before high speed chases will be a thing of the past as a satellite signal will disrupt the car's electrical system. It will be promoted as an ani-theft device. While it would stop a thief it also will track a person's movements.

The point being the government/law enforcement already have the technology to find out what they want to know. A database simplfies things. That's all.

So the 4th amendment is dead? Wonderful...

In your thoughts, a person using this for no good would only be found out after what ever happened is done...And the victims get what? An 'ah well, what a shame'?

Why is it when it was a republican was putting in place a similar act to track this nations enemies, liberals had a cow, but when a demo puts in place a system to track US citizens all is good?

"The Fourth Amendment (Amendment IV) to the United States Constitution is the part of the Bill of Rights which guards against unreasonable searches and seizures," (Dic.com)

What search and seizure is taking place when such information is public knowledge? Does the volunteer take a different route to their destination so others won't know? Do they use fake ID? Are volunteers sworn not to devulge the names of other volunteers?

Anyone can easily find out if someone is volunteering so what difference does having a list make?

Use the info for what nefarious reason, exactly?

No one is suggesting any particular person be stalked. It's not the tracking that is the problem. It's the stripping of rights. Having a list of volunteers is not stalking one particular individual anymore than having a list of licence plates and a driver's licences is stalking.

That's New Labour for you, those type of schemes are concocted without any consideration for the implications or indeed the cost.

Where am I displaying "outrage"? Is even asking a couple of questions now "outrage"? What's your problem Bijou? have you become so damned mired in attack the messenger that you can't even debate anymore?

It is typical liberal bullshit. When they don't have anything of value to add, they simply proclaim you are angry or outraged or some such nonsense.
