Ohio school district allows staff to be armed: 'Our schools will no longer be soft targets'

An Ohio school district's new policy allows teachers and school staff to be armed over concerns of response times to active shooters.

The River Valley Local School District in rural Marion County joins 22 other school districts in the state that permit approved staff members to carry weapons on campus, according to the Marion Star.

"Our schools will no longer be soft targets and unprotected," Superintendent Adam Wickham said, according to the outlet. "Most active-shooter events occur in areas of ‘gun-free zones’ or with minimal safety measures in place. We want to ensure our schools will not be soft targets."

"As a rural community, response times can often be minutes away in the event of an active shooter," Wickham went on. "The use of armed staff in our buildings can potentially save lives by providing a more immediate response to the threat. Recent school shootings such as in Nashville, Uvalde and Parkland clearly show that the quicker the response time, the more likely you are to potentially save lives."....

....The superintendent said that each of the school district's four buildings — which include a high school, a middle school and two elementary schools — will have an armed staff member in addition to the school resource officer on campus from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.....

.....According to Wickham, armed staff in the district will require more training than that recommended by the state. In 2020, the district required a total of 50 hours of training.

Hardening the target is the only way to reduce school shootings. Laws will not take guns out of the hands of criminals. Someone that is willing to murder won't follow gun laws.

Excellent. It's a real hunt when the prey is armed.

A slight disagreement on target hardening as the "only way". Better mental health care would nip a lot of problems in the bud. There would have to be supporting legislation such as Red Flag laws plus a very clear and fair system of returning rights (and guns) if the situation is cleared up.

Agreed criminals will continue to break laws as shown in California and New York where they have a lot of gun laws which only serve to disarm honest people.

Many of them have been armed for years. A program called FASTER was introduced years ago and gradually personnel from all over the country have taken part, and currently in MANY schools across this country, teachers are well trained and armed.

Why was the need unheard of 30-40 years ago?

Because there were expectations on people 30-40 years ago. If I went home and told my father I got in trouble at school he didnt go to the school the next day screaming, "How dare you", I got grounded. He didn't want to hear the story. Today kids "self esteem" must be protected at all costs. They are delicate flowers.

And yet - *gestures to the country where firearms are the #1 cause of death for children*

Let's just arm everyone and have shootouts covered on live TV.

There could not be a more stupid idea EVER than arming teachers and staff at a school. Just one more data point to use in the 2024 rout. A reckoning is coming. 2024 will wipe the country clean of the stench of Republicans. National, State and local elections. But keep doing stupid shit, Please. I just hope no one dies from this galactically stupid idea.

California ranks 6th in fewest firearm deaths per 100k. New York ranks 4th.

Ooops.

Great, now the First Grade teacher has to pack, that presents a warm feeling for the toddlers, “mommy why does Mrs Smith wear a gun?”

So now in addition to being over educated, under paid, subject to criticism and review by the local loudmouth, teachers will be required to arm themselves in the classroom so that anyone who wants a gun in America can get one
