Most of those I shot competitively with in the 80's used a M1A with a 20 rd. magazine. You know, those scary "assault weapons."
The use of the larger magazines meant no reloading during the rapid fire strings or the offhand position. So there is reason to have one.

Hey I have a Taurus Judge .45 LC/410 ,my home defense weapon, plus a Walker Colt and a Sharps .50 cal (both reproductions) but I rarely get to shoot them either I'm an INNS involuntary non shooter :(

My chicken farmer friend bought one of those .45LC/.410's to control rats around his chicken houses. Nice gun.
I have a 2nd. Gen Colt Army and a Uberti .44 cap and ball revolver. I shoot the Uberti pretty often, but the
Colt is still NIB. My father built the flintlock with a Don Getz barrel, a masterful build of a PA. long rifle.
I've been loading for and shooting my .220 Swift of late, groundhogs are coming out of their holes in the farm
fields and hedge rows. They create havoc in soybean fields, farmers are thankful we eliminate them. I like to
hunt them in the mornings and evenings. I'll set up and glass the fields on calm days.
