OK, guys...

Laudlum was liquified opium.

"Patent medicines"? You mean like medicines with patents on them? There have always been all sorts of them. Was aspirin a concoction of cocaine and heroine or something? Opium was overperscribed, but it does actually have a lot of medical uses, and in an age where there's nothing else it helped a lot.

Hmm I thought it also contained pot.

I could well be wrong.

Strange that we managed to exist for well over 100 years without any drug regulations.

It came from the bark of a tree...did you fail your pharmacy test again?

WM.
You might want to check out "Patent Medicines" during the late 1800's and early 1900's.

also check out drug use dring the 1920's. By some estimates nearly 1/4 of america was hooked on Cocane.

Laudnum is an opiate, like heroin. It didn't have pot in it. Notables addicted to it include Edgar Allen Poe, and Doc Holliday.

Laudanum (correct spelling) is a drink made from opium sometimes called "wine of opium", similar to the coca wines that were popular during the same era (such as Coca-Cola before it became a soft drink).

Troll beerr gut guy ?

It is a very valid question and once answered fully will change understanding for some.
