I know, I know...I just had to throw that in there. But I could go by the same line of thinking....What percentage of the executed came back to life and killed someone else. My line of thinking would beat yours.

This doesn't apply to you because I don't know what you think, but I really despise using economics as a reason to put people to death; i.e. "it would cost more to imprison X for life that to give him a lethal injection".

Well you shouldn't. The economics work out in favor of your position on this issue.

The appeals process death-row inmates are afforded by the constitution is considerably more expensive because of the legal costs incurred than simply jailing them for life. It would be unconstitutional and a violation of stare indecisis to strip away this appeals process, so the death penalty will for the foreseeable future remain more expensive than life imprisonment.

I'm absolutely in favor of whatever is cheapest. Before I did the research, I assumed that the death penalty would be. Since it's not, and since the death penalty as a concept is dubious anyway, I oft for life imprisonment over death.

It varies. The appellate courts do not HAVE to hear an appeal of convictions that do not involve the death penalty. If a case is appealed there has to be cause shown that the process leading to a conviction is problematic. The application for appeal can be turned down if the appellate judge(s) do(es) not see any potential for wrongful conviction.

If the death penalty is given, then the appeal process is automatic, VERY lengthy, as well as very expensive. Of course, if the state is going to take a person's life, they darned well need to make ABSOLUTELY certain the conviction was correct. As such every single step leading to the conviction should be gone over with a scanning electron microscope, regardless of the expense.

I have no problem with that.
As a matter of fact, I think they should create a New Supreme Court that hears nothing but Death Penalty Casses.
But then, I also think that the process should have the 'fast forward" button pressed.
