One of the reasons the death toll is as low as it is for COVID-19 is because we have gotten better at treating it.
When the worst of it hit last year we were approaching 4000 deaths per day.
During the current Delta surge, we have seen around 2000 deaths per day.
People have taken the wrong impression from that. They seem to think that has given us the freedom to forget about trying to limit transmission.
It reminds me of the improvements in driving technology.
At the worst of traffic danger, yearly fatalities were over 60,000 per year.
Then we got cushioned steering wheels and dashboards, seat belts, crumple zones, ABS brakes, radial tires, air bags, and better engineered highways. All of those improvements greatly reduced traffic fatalities. Fatalities have been reduced below 30,000 per year.
And the worst of drivers took it as reason to drive as if they were immune to death.
We now see the most aggressive drivers essentially taking the attitude that if there is no collision, then cars at speed are not too close.
And there is wanton disregard for safe speed.
I wonder how Tiger Woods is doing in his recovery?
