On the Stimulus Bill - The Dems Shouldn't Have Caved

I know you all just want your check, but if the show point of the stimulus bill is the provide stimulus, we'd be better off spending it through expansion of food stamps. Unfortunately, the Democrats are a bunch of pansies and can always manage to lose an argument when the facts are on their side:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- As Congress and the White House consider a $150 billion stimulus package that includes tax rebates and tax incentives for business, a report released Tuesday suggests that other methods would do a better job of infusing money into the flagging economy and doing it fast.

The industry research firm Moody's Economy.com tracked the potential impact of each stimulus dollar, looking at tax rebates, tax incentives for business, food stamps and expanding unemployment benefits.

The report found that "some provide a lot of bang for the buck to the economy. Others ... don't," said economist Mark Zandi.

In findings echoed by other economists and studies, he said the study shows the fastest way to infuse money into the economy is through expanding the food-stamp program. For every dollar spent on that program $1.73 is generated throughout the economy, he said.

"If someone who is literally living paycheck to paycheck gets an extra dollar, it's very likely that they will spend that dollar immediately on whatever they need - groceries, to pay the telephone bill, to pay the electric bill," he said.

Tracking that single dollar spent through the economic chain shows what economists call the ripple effect, Zandi said. For example, that dollar spent at the grocery store in turn helps to pay the salaries of the grocery clerks, pays the truckers who haul the food and produce cross-country, and finally goes to the farmer who grows the crops.

The report pointed to expanding unemployment benefits as the program that gets the next biggest bang for the buck. That's because, although the unemployed are already getting checks, they need to spend the money. For every dollar spent here, the economy would see a return of $1.64, Zandi said.

Expanding the food-stamp and the unemployment insurance programs are not in the current stimulus package expected to be passed by the House. In the Senate, the Finance Committee is now working on its own version of a stimulus package that might include extending unemployment benefits and other options.

Finally, Moody's report says business incentives such as tax breaks for buying new equipment - so-called accelerated depreciation - would give the least bang for the buck and potentially provide the slowest infusion of money. A dollar spent there would generate only 33 cents in the economy because, Zandi said, it takes longer for businesses to implement any benefit received.

Hopefully, the Senate can manage to make the stimulus bill a stimulus bill as opposed to a token gift to keep the masses quiet until the economy really goes to shit.

Yeah, well it's interesting to see that the two most beneficial means of providing any "stimulus" are the two things that are excluded from the bill.

That is all.

Bunch of horseshit. The government should just break a bunch of windows. That will surely stimulate the economy.

well the 300 will be long gone before the fall election and things are likely to be worse so it was money we don't have poorly spent in any case.

Actually the business equip part of the pkg might be the smartest part. Now if they had limited that to US manufactured equip....

Bush had a good line on the IRS accepts checks and money orders for those wanting to pay exptra.
I'll take my $1,500 check they can debate the other issue's later.

It's called the encumbant releaf package

That's a good one. It's designed to appeal to the brain-dead morons and seems to have squarely hit the mark.

We've got Keynes economics out of Monetary Policy since 79. No one thinks "Money Doesn't Matter" anymore and realize it's by far the most important thing. Now we need to get his "demand" control and "multipliers" out of fiscal policy and maybe we can finally have a more stable and less in debt economy.

Keynes policy led to neoclassicalism which has a healthy dose of Keynes, with the added direct monetary manipulation.

food stamps and unempolyment are entitlements not stimulus package. Dems need to get out of the way of the freight train called give me my check or they will get run over.

According to neoclassicalism and Keynes any spending by the government on anything at all is stimulus.

Yeah, Moodys is run by the Dems. No, better yet, it's Soros!

Do you read anything? Ever? You're a god-damned idiot.

Not quite, but this nonsense fails to see the damage done by taxing the money in the first place. It would have been spent in some other way and had the same "ripple" effect. They are focusing on what is seen and ignoring what is not seen as Bastiat explains in the essay.

This isn't a tax rebate, they are printing debt and giving it to people. There is no incentive to increase production. No ripple affect it's a net zero. Sure it will increase in the short term production, jobs ect but when it's paid back it will decrease these same things.

My stimulus plan includes legalizing theft. Crooks will spend every dollar stolen, because as they say easy come easy go. The multiplier will ripple through the economy and we will all soon be fantastically wealthy. And my plan is even better, because there is no middleman bureaurat. Woohoo!!!
