OT: Are the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves Too White?

In honor of the NBA season starting this week I had to post this because it is too funny. The NBA has 75% black players while the T-Wolves are 33% black (5 out of 15 players). Of their 10 white players 5 are from overseas. A black civil rights leader in Minneapolis believes it's a ploy by the owners to appeal to their white fan base. I've always thought fans like winning which is something the T-Wolves have done very little of and is why they have trouble drawing customers.

I've played on multiple basketball teams in my life where I was one of only a few white kids. Never really thought of it in racial terms though. Tyrone Terrell is pretty damn funny though.

Are Minnesota Timberwolves Too White?

Minnesota Timberwolves fans may notice something different about their team this year. In a league in which American-born black players made up 75 percent of roster spots in 2011, the Timberwolves will have an opening-day roster comprising just 33 percent black players (five out of 15).

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, this year's squad will be the league's whitest since the 1980s Boston Celtics.

Is that a problem?

Some civil rights leaders in Minneapolis think so. Tyrone Terrell, chairman of St. Paul's African American leadership council, told the Star-Tribune that he thinks the unbalanced roster could be seen as a ploy by the ownership to sell the team to a majority-white fan base.

"How did we get a roster that resembles the 1955 Lakers?" Terrell said to the Star-Tribune. "I think everything is a strategy. Nothing happens by happenstance."

Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn called the allegations "patently false."

Indeed, while the team lacks as many African-American players as most other squads, the Timberwolves are still quite diverse. Five of their ten white players were born outside of the United States.

Brandon Roy, projected to be the team's only black starter, says the color of his teammates doesn't faze him.

"It's just basketball," Roy said. "I never really had to feel like I'm the only black guy out here. I've played on teams that maybe had all black guys and the feeling is just the same when I'm out there on the floor playing with these guys."

Ron Edwards, a longtime Minneapolis civil rights advocate, told the Star-Tribune that it was "somewhat disturbing" when he saw a game last season in which Wes Johnson was the only black player on the floor for the Timberwolves. The composition of this season's roster has prompted Edwards to react even stronger.

"It raises some real questions to me about what's really intended," Edwards said. "I think, personally, that it was calculated. Is this an attempt to get fans back in the stands? Minnesota, after all, is a pretty white state.''

Edwards added that the Timberwolves' roster decisions are a "nullification of diversity and a reversal of history."

Kahn said the Timberwolves targeted two black players as free agents during the summer. But Portland matched Minnesota's offer to Nicolas Batum, and Jordan Hill opted to re-sign with the Lakers at less money for a better chance to win a championship.

"What if Batum and Hill were here?" Kahn said.

I think there is a better question to ask.

Why are european white guys succeeding in the NBA where American white guys aren't?

I'd imagine that the majority of white players in the NBA are not from the US.

Why is that?

Who is the best American-born white player in the NBA?

I'd say Kevin Love.

Who cares? Isn't this a "Man bites dog" issue? What about cultural diversity? Doesn't that count? Culturally speaking aren't they one of the more diverse teams in the league? What about proportionality? Does't the TWolves still have more black players than are in the general population? Where is it written that 75% of a team has to be black and why would it be assumed that there's a racist intent if they are not? As for the "Why aren't there more whites" in the NBA isn't that a provocative question? Why aren't they're more Jews in the NBA? Back in the 40's and 50's the NBA had a disproportionate number of Jewish players and they represented most of the best players in the NBA. Why aren't there more Jewish players now?

I have. I lived and worked there for a year.

Colder than Michigan, but there is a lake on every corner. Housing prices are through the roof.
Yea winter there can be rough from mid November through mid March but I found it one of the nicest cities I've ever been too. The people are friendly and engaged. It's very clean, culturally diverse, good employment opportunities, lots of parks and social and cultural events and venues abound It's also a very pretty city and the lakes, woods and country side surrounding the city are just drop dead gorgeous and it's one of the best places in the nation if you're interested in outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, cycling, off-roading, camping, etc, etc. That section of the country is with out a doubt one of the lovliest areas to live east of the Mississippi river. I love the Twin City's area but yea....winters can be a bit rough. More like Europe in that respect.

Because white guys no longer are allowed to cheat. That's why there aren't more Jewish players in the league. They weren't the best, just the best that were allowed to play.

All sports records that preceeded opening sports to all people should have an asterisk by their names.

My question about American-born white players and european players is not racially motivated. Both are white. It's a question of why are european players succeeding where American-born players are not. Race is really unimportant.

From my perspective, it's a matter of developed skills. Virtually all european players can handle the ball .. even the big men, and they all can shoot.

I have a bit different perspective. Minneapolis is a beautiful place. I loved driving down the road next to lakes and boats. I'm a naturalist, so I thoroughly enjoyed the nature there. Diverse, yes .. but on different levels. It is somewhat comparable to Seattle, but I loved Seattle far better than Minneapolis and the twin cities area.

If you looking for nature and diversity, Seattle is the place to be.

I lived in Seattle for a little over a year. I fell in love with it. If my business and family did not keep me here, till this day I would strongly consider relocating to Seattle. I may move back some day. Who knows what the future holds.

That makes two of us my friend.

Mt. Rainer, Puget Sound, the fish market, 3 major lakes within the city limit, salmon running in the streams next to your house, a spectacular view anywhere you live, a seriously diverse community with includes native people, Canadians (love them), and the largest population of interracial relationships on planet earth .. which makes for a more open society.

I love Seattle.

I can't disagree with you. I've never been to Seattle. Point being, The Twin Cities is a very nice city to live in. The winter aspect of it isn't to bad if your into snowmobiling and skiing and other outdoor activities.

Those are all on the plus side. On the cons side. 3D lives there. ;)

Sighhhhh. I know how you feel Darla. I loved living in the Charlotte, NC area but moved back to Columbus (which is a pretty nice community too) due to work and family issues. I'm glad I had the foresight to move back as I was needed here when my brother got sick and now that my parents are in they're golden years I'm doubly needed. I recently considered a promotion to a Project Managers position and my sisters had a cow when they found out. I was told I was needed here. So I loved living in the congenial and mild climate of the Carolinas and would like to return someday but family comes first.

I don't disagree with that .. but Seattle is a naturalist's Heaven.

I'm in Atlanta for the money and opportunity.

If I move from Columbus it will be for a combination of economic opportunity and quality of life. I'm considering checking out New Mexico. I've heard a lot of good things about the Santa Fe and Albuquerque areas. Seattle I'm sure is nice but I passed up an opportunity to move to Portland, which is similiar, cause I couldn't deal with the depressing maritime climate there. I want sunshine! LOL

I may go the expat route. Now that the standards of living are improving in other parts of the world I'm considering possibly a move to central American or SE Asia.

You are a good man, amigo.

I agree Kevin Love is best America born white player. Before him it has been awhile. You ask a great question bac. In the '80's there were a handful of white studs led by Bird and McHale. Not sure why the drop off. I don't think it's from a lack of interest.
