Prairie Wind Elementary students sent to check the weather before recess found something more disrupting to their outdoor playtime than rain.

The students spotted one or more people near their building, holding what appeared to be guns.

The school immediately went into lockdown and Omaha police were called.

Police didn't find any suspects or weapons, said Officer Jacob Bettin. But they did find bullets - the soft kind used in toy Nerf guns, Bettin said.

The school, near 109th Street and Ellison Avenue, returned to normal at 11:10 a.m., about 30 minutes after the lockdown began.

Omaha Public Schools spokeswoman Luanne Nelson commended the children who issued the alert. They spotted something unusual on school grounds and immediately went to adults in the building - just as they have been taught, she said

The kids did just what they were told. A knife means a knife, even if its the plastic butter kind, and a gun means a gun, even if it shoots foam balls or water. Reap what ye sow.
 
A friend of mines daughter was suspended from school indefinately for accepting a tablet of midol from another student when she was having her period. The school has a "zero tolerance" drug policy. She had to go to drug rehab to get admitted back into school and now has that in her permanent record and will probably never be accepted into a good college now nor will she be able to apply for student loans.
 
There you go Mott. And Boy Scouts have had their cars searched, and got tossed from school for having a pocket knife locked in the glove box. :good4u:

and have had very serious damage done to their reputations that have dreadfull long term consequences. All because some administrator is to lazy to do their job and would rather implement a "one size fits all" policy.

And Merchant Marine ROTC folk have been tossed out for having their "Piece" in the car. (For those who don't know a "piece" is a faux gun.)

that is not the administrators fault at all. It lies squarely with the taxpayers in that school district for demanding that the schools do everything possible to protect their precious little snowflake.
 
Yep, it is ridiculuous what we go through because of some nuts. Mandatory lockdown drills, bomb drills, etc. I do suppose if there ever were a real emergency of these kinds our schools will be better prepared to do some things right. But really. I found a 22 bullet out by the Ag classroom the other day, picked it up and tossed it to our Superintendent and said, "If we were some schools you'd have to put is in lock-down mode right now." Glad we aren't.

The thing about taking draconian, radical measures to combat a problem is that the draconian measures rarely work. The effectiveness of a policy often increases hyperbolically with the extremeness of the approach, not linearly...

As leaningright mentioned, liberal areas are the most likely to have such policies as this one with stupidity over fear of guns.
So that kind of throws your whole "we are too much of a paranoid Conservative nation" out the window doesn't it?
