Yes he was a big supporter of free trade, unlike the disaster Trump is about to foist on us. As the Wall St journey\l said, this is the single worse policy decision in a very long time.

We should all be very concerned. Trade wars are not "good" like he claims, nor are they beneficial to American interests. He's a simpleton, playing to a simpleton base who resent the global economy and do not understand how economics and trade work. There's a reason the markets worldwide are down lately.... most people are far smarter than Trump and the Trumpanzees and are righteously nervous.

There's a portion of the base yes but that's no different than the portion of the Democratic base that supported Bernie and his socialist policies. I get that people who have been hurt by free trade aren't always going to be a fan of it even though the country as a whole benefits. It's not unreasonable for someone to feel that way. But many Democrats have been against free trade so this isn't a blanket left/right issue.

I've always been unabashedly for free trade. Overall it's good.
 
History is going to record that those who voted for Trump, voted against the best interests of their country.

I am really not hearing a lot of "MAGA" or "nothing burger" anymore from the Trump fan-boy contingent.

It still isn't. This isn't even close to right wing.

What this will do:

1. Costs will rise for steel from foreign sources.
2. US companies will raise their prices to meet that increase as well.
3. They will hire a few people, let's give them way too many, 50K.
4. Companies that use the steel will raise their prices.
5. Nobody gets punished but the US citizens who are buying cars, building bridges... etc.
