I'm sure you understood what I meant. And a punt is not a compromise, it's a punt.
Whatever, Damo.

I disagree. Annie believes there are plenty of jobs. Enough for someone to have even multiple jobs if they work hard. She has said so repeatedly in this thread. The facts just don't line up with this, though and I think you know that. I find your statement surprising and indicative of either a dispairing (to me) lack of awareness on your part or some kind of party blinder situation.
Nope, I never said or implied 'there were plenty of jobs,' indeed I said there weren't enough jobs. What I did say and imply is that people are going to have to create their own jobs, which is very risky or they should take jobs they don't like for any number of reasons, to get back in the work force. Two and three year gaps in work are not going to lead to 'better jobs.'
Okay, let's 'look at me.' I've felt so welcomed here, with the empathy from the left regarding my position regarding employment.
I'm 56 years old. I am functionally deaf, with a bi-lateral hearing loss. I lost my teaching position in 2010. I collected unemployment that summer. Began substitute teaching in two districts the following Aug/Sept. One paid $80 per day, the other $95. The following Christmas break I applied for unemployment again, as 'loss of work due to day-to-day hire.' Surprise! Teachers are the only group in IL exempted from the cause. Yep, I don't have work for institutes and holidays. I've no benefits. The teachers retirement cost me over $24 for every $100 earned.
So without any 'safety net' I went and found part time work, at Walgreens. Wow! Truth to tell, this minimum wage job has been a life saver. Over the summer, remember I do not 'qualify' for unemployment, they gave me full time work. Not a lot, but certainly better than starving.
The 'empathy' on this board by some is so gross as to drive away anyone thoughtful but unwilling to attack you tools. May you rot in hell.
Whatever, Damo.
Yet an extension of those same benefits without change is what is asked for, and being rejected. I don't think they should pass it without attaching something that can actually change the situation. It's beyond irresponsible to argue that status quo continuance of a short term solution is the only thing that should happen.
I've always been a supporter that if you are on unemployment you should have to do something for it. Train in a new job, for instance. Clean the highways if you refuse to learn. And actually look for a job...
Yeah, we'd have to actually offer training but it at least puts a light at the end of a tunnel.
Some of what you say I could agree with. It's just the reality that hacks me off. Pass the status quo or we'll say you are monsters... It's rubbish. Monstrous is pushing for doing nothing while continuing in the same path that has led us to stagnation.
