Outlawing all abortions

Last November it became a crime for a woman to have an abortion in Nicaragua, even if her life was in mortal danger. So far it has resulted in the death of at least 82 women. Rory Carroll reports on the fight to have the law changed

From the Guardian:

This central American country has become the third country in the world, after Chile and El Salvador, to criminalise all abortions. It is a blanket ban. There are no exceptions for rape, incest, or life- or health-threatening pregnancies.

González was told at the hospital that any doctor who terminated her pregnancy would face two to three years in jail and she, for consenting, would face one to two years....

As a result of the blanket ban enacted last November at least 82 women have died, according to advocacy groups.

Think there might be some sort of bias involved in their numbers?

If that last sentence were something like "As a result of the blanket ban enacted last November the number of abortions have decreased by 82% with no reported adverse effects on the health of the women of Nicaraqua, according to advocacy groups". Don't you think there would be some "pro-choice" groups questioning the accuracy and legitimacy of these "reports"?

What if a pro-life advocacy group came out with doctors that said that none of those 82 deaths could have been prevented with an abortion?

You mean, 82 women have been murdered by the government, and been denied medical treatment, a form of torture banned in under most international treaties?

Republicans sent Clinton something to that effect and he refused to sign it because it made no provisions for the health of the mother.

Misleading. Very. When was the last abortion law that outlawed every single abortion passed by Congress?

You are speaking of the late term abortions ban, which I will agree did not include those words, but it certainly wasn't "to that effect" or even close to it. It specified a certain type of abortion, leaving other types open if such was the case.

My wife was a staunch pro lifer until about week 4 of working in labor delivery of her hospital. Now she is completely pro choice. think a few drug babies and a couple of 13yo deliveries changed her mind.

Go ask the doctors and nurses who get real life views what there opinions are.

I lived with one. My mother was an ICU Nursery RN... She was, and is to this day, strongly pro-life.

Its a medical fact that some women die from complications arising from pregnancies. You can quibble about the number 82, but you cannot be taken seriously if you ask people to "prove" that women die during pregnancies.

How do you feel about a law that outlaws all abortions (even in cases of rape, incest) or to save the mother's life...and further, that you would criminilize abortion, throwing doctors and women in jail?

I was actually pretty shocked because she is churchgoing catholic and I would never have expected her to become pro-choice.

Oh another unimportant but interesting tidbit. The younger a woman is when she gets preggo.. the worse the stretch marks will be. I did not know that.

my in laws are massive bible thumper s. LOL i always tell them i will ask for forgiveness the week before i die and will be at the same level in heaven as them. drives them crazy. so fun to do.

"Pro-life" is a misnomer.

For most who claim it, they are actually pro-UNBORN-life. Once born, you're on your own.

Not suggesting your mother of course, but most who claim to be pro-life are against any and every measure to help those children once born and are against any taxes for that purpose. Most are republican christian conservatives.
