He began his career at sea at age 5, on his fathers vessel. Built in 1924 with no metal fasteners and designed to last for 100 years, it is still in service today.
At 15 he joined the Norwegian Merchant Marines and sailed for 20 years. He was the first of his line to not go whaling. His grandfather was the first whaler to sail to the Antarctic Ocean in pursuit of whales.
He emigrated to the U.S. and captained and owned fishing vessels from New Bedford Mass.
It was said that he could pronounce the word beer in over 100 languages.
