Wait just a minute. The fact that he’s a preacher means he can’t have a public, political opinion or else your going to remove “his” tax exempt status? Newsflash... “He” is not granted tax exempt status. The church he preaches at may not have to pay taxes on the offering it takes in (after all it’s donated money that has been taxed already but that’s another discussion) but anything he personally receives as salary or whatever he has to pay taxes on. If he doesn’t he is guilty of cheating the system.
I receive a salary from the elders at the congregation where I preach. I have to file it as self-employment income and pay taxes on it and do so every year. The money left in the treasury of that particular congregation to do benevolent work with or to pay missionaries isn’t taxed until it is dispersed to whomever needs it. In the case of benevolent work, I’m not sure of the law concerning taxation of donations, but in the case of missionaries, they would be subject to the tax laws of whatever nation they reside in. For instance, we support a man in India. We pay him from the church treasury then he pays taxes on monies received as salary.
But back to the feeling that because I receive a salary from a church I am not supposed to be able to express a public, political opinion? Smh...
