When the war ended before he could use that training, they started training him to be a nuclear engineering officer. He was part of the first generation of navy nuclear engineering officers, and was going to be the nuclear engineer on the second nuclear sub, the USS Seawolf. Then his father died.

One can go back and forth between being a nuclear engineer, a peanut farmer, a governor, and a President. Carter did just that.

Carter designed the training for enlisted men, and he was in charge of cleaning the Canadian nuclear plant disaster at Chalk River
