I'll give you an example of the need for this: I have a nice little military pension and a job that I like with excellent benefits, but doesn't pay diddly squat(there is ANOTHER small state pension waiting at the end of the line, though). Top this off with social security at 65 and it turns out I'll be making more money sitting on my butt watching Jeopardy and going to early bird specials than I am now, still working! This stuff just ain't sustainable. Rush Limbaugh put it very well when he asked if progressives really wanted to pay him social security and medicare. He was making an estimated 22 million bucks a year when he said that. This is a relatively simple math problem in the huge calculus equation that is the screwed up American economy. A conservative blogger said yesterday, "with the selection of Paul Ryan comes Obama's biggest nightmare: MATH"

I don't think my own people would call a 25 year military career "leeching", do you? How about a 10 year 2nd career as a vo-tech teacher? Do YOUR people even think I'm a leech for taking a pension for that? And I still work for the same reasons a lot of other retirees are still working:
1) Remember, I said my pension was "little". I retired as an enlisted man, not a general.
2) I have expensive interests, like eating and paying the rent.
3) I was only 43 when I retired from the military. I wasn't exactly ready for the old folk's home.

Paul Ryan Only Passed 2 Bills Into Law In More Than A Decade
WASHINGTON -- He's been in Congress for nearly 13 years, but Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has only seen two of his bills pass into law during that time.
Ryan, who Mitt Romney has tapped as his running mate, passed a bill into law in July 2000 that renames a post office in his district. Thanks to Ryan, the post office on 1818 Milton Ave. in Janesville, Wis., is now known as "Les Aspin Post Office Building."
The other time Ryan saw one of his bills become law was in December 2008, with legislation to change the way arrows (as in bows and arrows) are hit with an excise tax. Specifically, his bill amended the Internal Revenue Code to impose a 39-cent tax per arrow shaft, instead of a 12.4 percent tax on the sales price. The bill also "includes points suitable for use with arrows in the 11 percent excise tax on arrow parts and accessories."
Kevin Seifert, Ryan's congressional spokesman, did not respond to a request for comment.
UPDATE: 2:30 p.m. -- It appears Ryan had a personal interest in passing the arrow tax bill: He is an accomplished bowhunter.

FYI on Military Retirement:
If you retire from the military with 20 years of active service, you immediately begin drawing a pension, which can start at around age 38 if you enlisted at age 18, and had no break in service, and didn't lose any years of active time by serving on Drill Status in the Guard/Reserves.
Only if you retire from the Guard/Reserves with at least 20 years and enough "satisfactory service" points, but do not have 20 years of active duty retirement points, do you have to wait until age 60 to collect your pension.
Many active servicemembers retire well before age 60, and take on a second career while still collecting on their military pension.
He said pension, not retirement; so your assumption is wrong. There's a difference between military retirement and pension.
