Pentagon giving away13,000 'free' armored trucks to police

The U.S. Army is giving away 13,000 armored trucks, worth about $500,000 each. The 20-ton MRAPs, or Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected trucks, were built specifically to save U.S. soldiers from roadside bombs in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Now the trucks are patrolling U.S. city streets. U.S. law enforcement agencies have received the lion’s share of this high-powered military surplus.

:whoa:
Looks like Obama is arming the local StormTroopers for an all out war...

I dont believe this story has any legs. I had read that most of these vehicles will be left behind for the Afghani and Iraqi forces.

Two questions; did we way overreact and build that many vehicles we didnt need; and why?

What would a local police department need with such a vehicle?

To fight domestic terrorists

To fight domestic terrorists

Thats a fascinating claim. So how does one fight these poorly armed terrorists with a monster truck costing $500K?

How would this truck have stopped the Boston bombers? How would it have prevented Timothy McViegh from bombing the building in OKC?

These are trucks of war; not police vehicles.

I can see no reason a police department would need such a truck. Wonder why we did not just sell them to another country, at least we could have got some money out of them?

Are those the only conceivable scenarios?

Other countries aren't interested. And it looks like this type of vehicle is already being used here in some cities.

"Interest from foreign militaries has been tepid. But they are a hit with stateside police agencies. Almost 200 trucks have been distributed to police departments since August and requests are pending for an additional 750 trucks. The vehicles, many of which feature machine-gun turrets, are off-limits to private citizens and businesses.

Lucky recipients run from the Ohio State University campus police force to Florence County, S.C., which replaced an armored vehicle from the 1970s that the sheriff department's SWAT team had used for about 15 years. A new armored truck would have cost at least $188,000."

Other countries don't want them because other countries don't feel the need to conduct SWAT raids on unlicensed poker games. We, however, love doing such things.

These vehicles are extremely expensive to operate and very bulky to find space to park them. But the real sad part here is that this is an example of Pentagon overkill. Why the hell did we need so many of these vehicles???

It's insane and typical of the non-thinking wasteful procurement common to the Pentagon and US Government primarily driven by political over-reaction to news media criticisms of the Bush Administration and efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

How do you know it's overkill?

How do you know how these were used in the wars?

Answer - you don't.
