The Pentagon on Monday unveiled new grooming standards, which now require service members “to be clean shaven and neat in presentation for a proper military appearance.”

Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement Monday that following “a rapid force-wide review of military standards” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “recently directed the Services to implement the following grooming standards for facial hair.”

“The grooming standard set by the U.S. military is to be clean shaven and neat in presentation for a proper military appearance,” Hegseth said in a quote in Parnell’s statement.

Earlier this month, President Trump signed an order to change the name of the Department of Defense into the “Department of War,” framing the change-up as a sign of American strength. He also suggested that prior lengthy wars under the old moniker were caused by political correctness.

The president signed an executive order that allowed the department’s name change and for Hegseth’s title to change to secretary of War. A permanent name change will require an act of Congress.

“Commanders must apply consistent criteria and appropriately consider the Department’s interests in safety and uniformity when authorizing individual exceptions,” Parnell said in his Monday statement

“Military medical officers will provide a written recommendation concerning a shaving waiver to the commander who is the final approval authority. Service members with an approved shaving waiver will participate in a medical treatment plan,” he added.

Kinda humorous given a good percentage of Trump’s team have facial hair

Old school, but having been there, not a bad idea, saves time grooming and maintaining, same logic parents back in the day always insisted their young boy have brushcuts

You are against that???
So also mustaches ? Or religious reasons ? You were never in the military peckerwood boy, you are clueless

Religious exemptions for beards are granted on a case-by-case basis for specific religions like Sikhism, Rastafarianism, and orthodox Judaism

The beards which became common, were a response to the lack of respect given by many Muslims to a male without a beard.

Has the need to be respected by middle eastern cultures suddenly disappeared?

Was this new policy well thought through? Can we at least provide and exception from the last people tasked to be in the ME, during the pull out?

That was never the case. Up to the early 20th century, shaving required a straight razor and a considerable bit of time to be done. Most men didn't have that sort of time every day, along with the necessary mirror, soap, etc., to shave. So shaving was more commonly done like once a week or a beard was grown when shaving wasn't really possible.

Then King Gillette invented the safety razor and WW 1 came along. The combination made clean shaven reasonably quick and easy as well as a lifesaving necessity due to gas warfare. That stuck. You have WW 2 with the same thing occurring. That became a social norm for men until recently.

In the Middle East, you don't necessarily need a beard, and most Muslim men don't have one unless they are on the strict side of that religion. A mustache is sufficient. In India today most men only shave once or twice a week due to lack of sufficient funds for doing so daily.

Actually it is. Beards are difficult to keep looking neat and trimmed. Beards interfere with using a gas mask and CBR equipment. If a service member is stationed in the ME, they can grow a mustache if they want. I had one before being assigned over to that region and it was sufficient to get Muslim men, if that counted, to respect me.

How much time have you spent under arms in the middle east?

You can't wear a gas mask effectively with a beard. Even Fire Departments prohibit beards.
